I just read on the Korea Herald website that after Korea's victory against Togo, many excited people were jumping onto the roofs of buses, taxis and other cars. One guy in Busan did a 20 minute strip-tease because he was so happy, while many more jumped into the sea out of sheer joy. Are they stupid or something? I hope some people are ready to pay for the damage they did to someone's car. I'd be pretty pissed if someone jumped on my car over a game....a freaking game. They didn't make ONE BUCK off the game!!!!!!!!!! Geez!!!!!!!!!!! |

At least they didn't riot, which is known to occur in more "civilized" nations.

It's a different culture. Koreans don't care about cosmetic damage to their cars. Look around and you'll see lots of cars with scratches and minor dents. The Italians are the same way I've heard.
I think people are just letting off steam. And there's probably a lot of steam to let off in this country.
But here's a surprise. Quote form the Korea Herald. Excited crowds jumped onto the roofs of buses, taxis and other cars
The taxis part surprised me. I can't see even the mellowest ajoshi letting any punks dance on the hood of his car. On the other had, what's he going to do? Geez! I'd pay money to see that.
It's all good. |

no offense, but this post seems kinda out of touch. have you ever been to a big sports game? in some colleges, you can't leave a car parked on the main street after a big game or it's almost surely going to get flipped. i was in gangnam and people were going nuts but it was pretty tame and nonviolent.

I was in the PNU area and there were a couple thing i saw that were....hm...surprising? But for every different reasons.
It started when a guy went up on someone's shoulders and cheering. In about 30 seconds, everyone started yelling in korean, "Take off your shirt". He became really shy...giggling...neh, tittering and looking embarrassed. It too a couple minutes but eventually he took off his shirt and EVERYONE dudes and chicks went mad.
That was strange.
But i found SHOCKING is that, 30 minutes later, a girl was up on someone's shoulders and men and women (alike) were yelling "take off your shirt". Surprise surprise, THAT didn't happen. But i'll tell you: at the world up in 02, I had EVER heard anyone scream "take off your shirt" to a chick. |

But, my God, jumping on the roof of someone's car? That will damage a car, and if it's not your car, that's just plain wrong!!!!! Would you want someone jumping on your car's roof? |

That's positively innocent compared to the drunken fighting that goes on amongst Soccer Hooligans of the world. I wonder if Korea has any Soccer Hooligans? If not, what do you want to bet that they will by next WC? |

Yes, I have. My high school's guard house was burned down after a football game one time, but damaging cars is another story^^ It seems extreme. |

Considering the number of people out celebrating was in the millions, there was relatively little damage. I say kudos to Korea for having such a massive public event nationwide with minimal civil disorder.
Look at the damage that's been caused by rioters in Edmonton with the Oilers' wins leading up to the Stanley Cup. |

I'll never understand the urge to destroy stuff because your team just won the Big Game...or any game for that matter. Why would someone break stuff when they're happy? |

Because maybe the person whose stuff you are breaking won't get pi$$ed off because they are so happy. |
