I am looking at a school and housing in the NoWonGu area of North Seoul. Relatively safe area for a single gal? Neighborhood peculiarities a tourist website might not note? Any tips on things to bring there?
Thanks!

I lived there for 4 years. Very nice area, relatively quiet, lots of trees, cleaner air than other areas of Seoul. Not an abundance of nightlife, although the Dragon Bar is OK once in a while.

PM me and tell me what school.

If you decide you don't like the school or area I can hook you up with a bunch of other schools in Seoul that are looking for teachers.

That is correct. Avoid it like the plague.

I don't understand. How does that work if you're given a contract? You should have a set amount of income, plus OT or whatever else one might do. Right?

I've just been offered a position in Nowon as well. Can I get a more thorough depiction? I asked specifically for Seoul, because I want to be in a (very) large city. Tall buildings, bustling with activity...etc...Is this the suburbia boonies?

For example, if I want to go out on the weekends, is this too far to ride home in a taxi at 4 am from somewhere like Hongdae? Where is Hongdae?

Someone told me that it might be a University area...is that true?

Hongdae is on the other side of the city--if Nowon is 1 o'clock, Hongdae is roughly 9 o'clock. I haven't taken a taxi between the two, but I have taken one from Itaewon, which is half the distance, for 18-20,000won. Most Hongdae goers wait until the subway starts again around 5:30am. Heck, if your up at 4 anyway, what's the dif?

Despite what you might read on Dave's Nowon is a nice place to be: relatively quiet, cleaner air, lots of trees. Action packed is it not. And it is one of the less well off areas, so no big money privates to be had. The uni there does provide housing, but it's on campus.

I agree with RobinH.
We were in Dobong-gu but our main school was in Nowon-gu, so we went there quite a bit. We were in a quiet rich newish area (suburb inside the city). Nowon was much more city-like. You're really not going to find anywhere in Seoul without tall buildings, but depending what you're looking for, they won't be the bustling buildings you want.

I really don't see how the finances of the place would affect any of us (unless you are looking for privates). Nowon has a Hagwon center... tons of them there... with lots of customers, too. I find all rich neighborhoods do is sell the exact same food in the grocery stores at a much higher price.
