After months of salivating over the new Nintendo DS design, I finally picked one up today! Very Happy

It really is a thing of pure beauty. Knowing that it hadn't yet been released in the UK, and the somwhat bizarre lack of presence by Nintendo in Korea, I didn't hold out much hope of getting one for some time. So I wandered aimlessly around Yongsan's gamers floor, looking at nothing in particular, when my eyes zoned in on the magical box of whiteness. Could it be? Nestled between pirated psp games and other random stuff - an official, imported from America, DS Lite? My bottom lip began to quiver. I'm one lucky SOB to find this, I thought, and had no qualms about parting with the 170000 won. No bartering, as I was expecting to pay more than that anyway. I maybe could've knocked manwon off the price, but seriously, I didn't care.

So what's it like I hear you all cry. (please humour me Smile - what follows is an entirely biased DS Lite review!)

Well the first thing that struck me when I turned it on, was how f'in bright the screens are. Compared to the original model, where you can't see anything on a bright day, the DS Lite has four brightness settings. The lowest setting is brighter than the original. And at it's brightest... well, I'm sure it could floodlight the World Cup Stadium! As well as being incredibly bright, the screens are also much crisper. So, in a nutshell, the screens rock.

As for aesthetics, well, it's pure white (a la Apple stuff). The exterior has a glossy finish, while the inside has a nice matt surface. It's lighter and smaller than the original, so no more hand cramps following Tetris marathons (yay for me!). They have moved a few things around to make it not so ugly, and, IMHO, have done a great job. The repositioning of the mic to the centre of the unit was a smart idea. The stylus has also been improved and is now much more comfortable to use. I really can't think of anything bad to say about it, perhaps cos I'm so giddy with excitement! Maybe the speakers could be louder, but that's about it. This thing is awesome!

I'm trying desperately hard to not sound too fanboyish, but I just can't help myself. I'm pretty sure that, with this redesign, and the very promising Wii console due for release in December (maybe?), Nintendo are well on their way to world domination. Or something...

By the way, in case you hadn't guessed, I love Nintendo. Razz But for a more professional, unbiased review check out the following link:

Ciao!

I've been looking to pickup one of these, too. I've been checking the internet sites in Korea and they're going for about 210-220 thousand. I think you got a pretty good deal. I've heard they're going to go for $120 in the U.S. on June 11th. Might get my parents to send me one. Good on you...I can't wait!

Why would you ever want a DS when you could buy a PSP?

More games. More variety of games. New gameplay styles. Better battery life.

And it's easier to bootleg the games! Very Happy

Nintendo have long been out of ideas. It's just a rehash of old products.

Sony and Microsoft systems just seem to cater more to an adult market whereas Nintendo haven't quite escaped the bright colors and less than complex gaming.

At the end of the day I just want the best system, I could care less about the branding on it, but I guess there will always be one 'original' poster who thinks that it's a valid line of reasoning whenever disparity arises.

Yeah never mind the fact that they were the first to incorporate a motion sensor controller which Sony copied for the PS3. Or set the standard of using analog control on the N64 (which Sony also copied).

Nintendogs, Elite Beat Agents, Kirby Canvas Curse, Brain Age, Feel the Magic XY/XX, Cooking Mama, Lost in Blue, Meteos.....

All of those games (with the exception of Kirby) are completely original IP on the DS. And they've all got unique play mechanics (as does Kirby, which is why it's on the list). There are plenty of great games on the DS that aren't rehashes of anything.

Can you say the same for the PSP?

(Note: I think the PSP is technically a fine system. The screen is great and the games look nice. But there's damned little originality to be had there. Lumines and....what else? Are there any standout PSP games that aren't jsut stripped down versions of PS2 titles?))
