Big mistake, dude. Those things aren't worth the paper they're printed on outside of the ROK. Next time, go with AMEX cheques. They're golden. |

You make a BIG mistake.
Korean "checks" are just domestic paper and NOT for international use.
IF you are taking up residence there and have opened a bank account you may be able to get a bank to cash them as a demand note but you won't get credit for them until they are returned to Korea and have cleared the system. Then they will be credited to your account. This may take a month or more and the service charges may be high.
Alternatively, depending on where you are at, you may be able to find one of the Korean tour package groups who may be willing to buy them back from you. Try the Hilton Hotel in Bangkok, Adrianna Hotel in Pattaya, and I forget the name of the hotel on Phuket that hosts the Korean tour package/ tour groups.
Tell them your story, show them the Korean visa in your passport, and they may be kind to you.
Good luck. |

This is a good suggestion. Probably won't work (imagine if roles were reversed and a stranger was trying to exchange a check for $ with you) but it's your best bet. Give them your Korean phone number address etc. There's a Korea town area on Sukhumvit Rd up near Ashok skytrain stop. Around Soi 16 or so. Possibly some Korean expats etc. Even the Korean run restaurants around Khao San Rd let Koreans pay for their food / hotel etc with won rather than baht so they may be willing to exchange one of these babies for you.
They are essentially useless outside Korea though, so whoever changes the thing is going to have to get it back to Korea before they can get the money. |

^yes but this IS Thailand and package tour groups are always briefed on the many scams that are set up especially to con tourists-like gold and gems etc... so someone trying to sell them cheques will look dodgy... |

No guarantees, but I suppose you could try the Korean Embassy...someone there might change for won. Might even run into a sympathetic ex-pat on a visa run. |

And, DO let us know how it all works out, if you try any of these suggestions.
Just to help anyone in future, should someone make the same mistake!
Good luck! |

Dude, you're poop out of luck. They won't even change K-checks at the airport for foreign currency (which ends with the traveler paying for gum with 100,000W checks which i've had to do.) I've even heard stories of teachers who finish their contract and get their severence paid in checks, not cash or direct deposit which are not exchangeable for goods and services anywhere outside of Korea. This is worse than useless and requires a lot of effort and hassle on the part of the teacher to fix.
I hope you have another foreign acount in your homeland or enough left in your Korean account and/or a cirrus or plus bank card. If not, you're pretty screwed. Barring that, see if you have friends/family that can wire you money via Western Union or some other such service. As a last resort, you can try your embassy and see what kind of service or help they can offer. |

Not worth the paper they are printed on outside of Korea. They are not a cheque in the sense that we know cheques. They are basically a domestic promisory note issued by the bank, redeemable at a merchant. Bad luck. |
