Once in a while I'll buy a bag of Fritos, Doritos, or Cheetos and they're coated with sugar. When I really need a fix I head to Hannam or the Red Door and get American Doritos.

Am I the only one who's bothered by this flagrant disregard for snack conventions?

while i agree the cheetos and fritos are definilty different, dorritos taste the same to me here. Maybe I just wasn't a big enough consumer of the chip back home to tell the difference.

Yah, no kidding, we always resorted to Pringles to get our salt fix.

Just as an aside, if you get the chance offer a Korean a Lays "Salt and Vinegar" Chip!

OOOOh Watch them squirm!!!!

Koreans always have to have their own version. Look at their version of a donut. I can't stand their chocolate or their cakes either. No wonder I've lost 5kg over the last year and a half (75 down to 70kg). I can't stand the snackfood here and have to go to Seoul to get some.

You lost it, and I found it! Very Happy
I think more people gain weight than lose it here.

I'm sympathetic to beaver's rant. Doritos do indeed have sugar all over them, which is just as wrong as putting corn on pizzas. Pringles are the same here though. Why can't Doritos be what they should?

For that matter, why is Paris Baguette incapable of making a cake without raisins or beans or some other stupid thing jammed in the middle?

That is the other thing that is annoying, I agree. Sometimes I crave some real bready snacks, anything with bread. But its always filled with sugar with some sugary something or another. No wonder Koreans don't like bread so much, they don't have any decent bread here.

I'm taking bets on how soon it will be before one of the "if you want Western food, stay home!" guys descends on this thread.

And don't say anything about wanting cheese, cause that's when then they REALLY bring out the big guns.

Can some one explain to me why just because I chose to live in South Korea, I must also like Korean food, or be labelled a Korea hater?

I'm Canadian, but I don't really like "typical" Canadian food, and my attitudes towards traditional food from home are something between disgust and horror. ( cod tongues taste terrible and the methods of killing seals for flipper pie are at least as brutal as anything I've heard related to boshintang, but this kinda food is Newfie traditional only!)

I can see it being a problem if I launched a Brigitte Bardot style campaign against Korean food. . .but I'm not. I just wanna be able to have what I want for dinner and yes, I am willing and able to cook for myself.

I LOVE Korean food. However, I also crave other familiar foods that I can't taste here as well. When I'm back home though, I also miss Korean food because of the same reasons.

Me too. I once tried a Kit Kat once and noticed they removed most of the chocolate and filling! I can see the Korean ad for it now: "That dry, crumbly cardboard snack for times when you need it the most"

Amen brother. I hate raisins! And I hate fake chocolate too!

Damn, I'd live around hannam if I could afford it, and I'm in Busan. I seriously gave thought to ordering and having them ship the cheese down here, as they said it was possible.

By bus, they said. In winter. With a shipping fee. On top of the already high price. Bah. Crying or Very sad
