I've never collected travel points before but I'm wondering if I should be.
How do I do it...?

Check how long the point last with each company. I gained some travel points Japan airlines, but to use them I would have to fly 1 a month from Korea to Toronto.

It all depends on which airlines you tend to fly on.

The biggest ones are Star alliance and Skypass.

Asianna is part of the star alliance ( http://www.star-alliance.com/star_alliance/star/frame/main_10.html ) click on the link for loyalty benefits.

Korean air is part if Skyteam ( http://www.skyteam.com/EN/aboutSkyteam/aboutKorean.jsp ).

Between the 2 systems you get points by flying on any of the almost 40 airlines. Read about each systems member benefits on their respective links.

If you do any additional flying while you are here you can usually accumulate enough points over a year or two to upgrade your homeward bound flight from cattle class to business class. Nice way to go home when the time comes.

Check out Star Alliance, which is the largest umbrella-group of airlines offering frequent-flyer benefits. It includes Singapore Air (my fave), Asiana and ANA (not to mention the dreaded Air Canuck).

You can join the network by enrolling in any one of the member programs. Here's the Star Alliance link to the whole set:
