I was just on an elevator with 13 ajummas!!

And these were the prototypical, class-1, grade A type ajummas. All about 5 foot nothing, super ajumma perm, wonderful dye jobs, all smacking on gum, and wearing the ajumma uniform -- flowered shirt with striped pants/ striped shirt with paisley pants. It was the single, most horrifying event in my life.

I must have had my toes stepped on and ribs poked about a dozen times each.

I have to go take another shower now Crying or Very sad

Heh, heh, I'm reading this book (Middlesex), and last night I read a line that made me think of ajummas. I don't remember it exactly, but it was in reference to a Greek female character. Something like, "Desdemona was only 43 years old, but in the way that women of her culture are, she was already an old woman. Strands of gray streaked her hair, and her glasses unnaturally magnified her eyes." The line about her already being an old woman at 43 is what really struck me.

You know, I'll never understand the helmet perm. Women back home do it, and apparently it's suppossed to uplift your face so you don't look like your skin is sagging. Supposedly it's convenient. So straight hair is inconvenient? If it's bothering you, pull it back or stick it behind your ears! How much is a perm, anyway? I'll die before I perm my hair..... Oh, crap, I'm starting to sound like another poster you guys like to bash around...

Any theories on why the prevalence of this? It's not some (my home country also has middle-aged fashion nightmares), but a really sizeable percentage here in Korea.

Who told them it looks good?

Unfortunately it's a syle that westerners created, so we can blame the US for that~lol! I'll bet you anything that a hairstylist recommends it, or the poor woman's family and friends recommend it (general peer pressure), and they either a). get sick of hearing that they should get a perm, or b). it begins to sound like a novel idea. Then they just settle into a rut, and the hairstyle stays the same. For decades. Until death.

My Korean friend told me awhile ago that once I get married, my MIL would "make" me change my hairstyle, and cut it short, as only single woman should have long hair. I figured married women weren't supossed to be attractive to men anymore, and she concured that yes, that was the reasoning behind it. Have you heard the term "missy" used to describe attractive married women?

yeah, i heard something like that. They think long straight hair looks inappropriate on an older woman. the point, then, isn't to look good but to look your age. f**king stupid though, if you ask me.

One of my former 'housewife' students got a divorce, grew out her hair and is now quite the stunning gal. She does NOT look her age at all, quite a bit younger. Doesn't act her age either, she's having a lot of fun and has a great job she likes.

Must have been the hair.

Bravo her life!
