Ban Olympic Opening & Closing Ceremonies:
Prince Philip

Sat May 27, 5:07 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - Olympic opening and closing ceremonies are "absolute bloody nuisances" and should be banned, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II said.

Prince Philip expressed his annoyance at the staple of the quadrennial sports jamboree in an interview with the Daily Telegraph during which he also chipped in with a view on an England footballer's World Cup-threatening injury.

The Olympic Games came up as the 84-year-old -- a world champion carriage driver -- recalled having to attend as a president of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI).

"Opening and closing ceremonies ought to be banned. Absolute bloody nuisances. I have been to one that was absolutely, appallingly awful -- aaaagh," he was quoted as saying, without mentioning the host city.

The prince, who said he would like to do "as little as possible" when London hosts the 2012 Games, confessed he was horrified when told at one competition that showjumping was no longer to be held in the main arena as the last event.

"So I said, 'What is the Olympics about? The competition or the closing ceremony?' So I'm truly fed up with opening and closing ceremonies. They're a pain in the neck," he added.

Philip, a lifelong sportsman who still competes in horse driving, said he had been lucky with injuries throughout his career, bringing him onto the subject of England player Wayne Rooney's fifth metatarsal, which continues to dominate British sports pages.

"I've had very few things go wrong. It's terrible for people who break things. Take Rooney.
That must be really hideous for him at the high point of his career," he said.

But asked what he thought about 17-year-old Theo Walcott, the untried Arsenal forward brought in as Rooney's replacement, he was more circumspect.

"No idea," he said. "I don't have opinions about things I know nothing about." Laughing

Anyone who knows of Prince Philbot knows better to pay any attention to what he says... unless you're looking for a laugh at his utter cluelessness.

Just goes to show what never working a day in your life can do for a person.

You managed not to get eaten, then?" (in 1998, to a student who had been trekking in Papua New Guinea)

"If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it." (at a 1986 World Wildlife Fund meeting)

C'mon, that's funny stuff!

I guess it's a pain when you're royalty and have to sit through all this kind of stuff. I wonder if he felt the same way about the dignitaries and public who sat through the weddings of his children? I guess when his wife opens parliament that's all just boring twaddle. Geez.

Anyway, I love the opening/closing ceremonies and watch them. I mostly like the march of the countries. I like to see what they're wearing and scope out exotic babes.

I love the opening ones, great fun to watch. The closing ceremonies is like when you get really drunk (and maybe take some E) and then wake up the next day to someone really ugly, you don't want to sit there and hang out one last time, you wanna get outta there and fast. Having a party to remember people's failures is a little sad.

He'll be lucky if he's still drawing breath in 2012.

Presumptuous twit.

Secretly, I always hoped he knew what was going on and he just thought it was a funny thing to say.

I HOPE so...

Speaking of Prince Phillip Quotes, this has got to be one of the most ... interesting ...

If I were reincarnated, I would wish to be returned to Earth
as a killer virus to lower human population levels.

I agree with bigverne. He's awesome. Here are some more:

What do you gargle with - pebbles? (1969)

* Said to Tom Jones after the The Royal Variety Performance

Do you know they have eating dogs for the anorexic now? (2002)

* Said to a blind woman with a guide dog

If you travel as much as we do you appreciate how much more comfortable aircraft have become. Unless you travel in something called economy class, which sounds ghastly. (2002)

* Commenting during the Jubilee tour

You look like you're ready for bed!

* Said to the President of Nigeria, who was dressed in traditional robes
