Actually shariah law IS practised in Canada (at least in Ontario) though I doubt the harsher penalties are meted out. |

The head of Canada's Ontario province has rejected attempts to allow Muslims to use Sharia law in family disputes.
A report by Ontario's former attorney general Marion Boyd had recommended the use of Islamic law to settle issues such as divorce and child custody.
But Premier Dalton McGuinty ruled against the move, saying there should be "one law for all Ontarians".
Protests were held against the Sharia law proposal in major Canadian cities, as well as in Paris, London and Vienna.
Critics said allowing Islamic tribunals could lead to discrimination against women.

Are you aware of Sharia being applied in other areas of the Ontario legal system?

It should be pointed out that the plan to allow Sharia marital arbitration tribunals in Ontario wasn't really a case of Muslims sauntering off the boat and demanding that the infidels put the woman back in their place. Catholics and Jews had already been granted similar arbitration rights in the 1990s. So all the Muslims were demanding was the same thing that had already been given to other religious groups. The government eventually scrapped the entire religious arbitration system. |

Eh, Roch my man. I think you forget to include a comment with your quote there. Looking forward to it, though. |

You're very quick off the tee.
I'm wondering if Marion Boyd is from Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Roch:
According to Wiki, Boyd was born in Ontario, graduated from university there, and worked at York University and a London Ont. woman's shelter before entering the NDP government of Bob Rae. It does not mention her having any connection with PEI.
What made you think she might be from PEI?

Hi,
There was a well-known and well-educated woman named Marion Boyd in Charlottetown in the early '90s.
Thanks for the tip.

17 windows smashed for 17 terrorists.
For the record, I think they really are guilty, and it's unfortunate that they are Canadian born, because we can't justifiably send them anywhere. Maybe to the moon. There they can't spread their hatred around.

Muslim isn't a race.
And it makes sense, today, to look disproportionately at Muslims when preventing (or trying to prevent) terrorism.
The acts of vandalism against that Mosque in Toronto (17 windows smashed) are deplorable and those who did it I hope will be brought in front of a court. But, if we are going to have a serious debate about modern terrorism, it is necessary to ask "why Islam?" (regardless of what conclusion that will bring us to in the future).
All Canadians, including the press, should be asking serious questions about Islam and the nature of Jihad, should we wish to understand what almost took place.
Islam, the religion, is most certainly under scrutiny, and I don't think that that is in and of itself a bad thing. Provided, of course, that Canadians continue not to pass judgement on a whole group based upon the actions of a few. |
