Anytime any recycle bin toting mac fan starts blathering on about what a great guy Steve Jobs is, ask mac fan how much Steve Jobs has ever given to charity. |

Is Bill Gates going into politics? Didn't he set his retirement date at 2008? |

That would surprise me. He doesn't strike me as a publicity-seeking kind of guy. |

Somehow that doesn't make sense
You think that ill gotten gains by monopolizing, distributed to charity, are redeemded of their "illness"?
I think not. |

This is just one more thing that impresses me about individual and, well, pretty much anything non-governmental in the States. NASA being the exception of course. Google, Wikipdia, etc. etc.

To maintain its status as a charitable foundation, it must donate at least 5% of its assets each year. Thus the donations from the foundation each year would amount to over $1 billion at a minimum. After Buffet's donation is accounted for, the charity will be required to give out a minimum of $2.8 billion dollars a year, which averages out to be about $90 every second. |
The areas in which the money's being given out don't excite me in particular (university scholarships, medical research etc.) but today's announcement was still pretty dope.
Edit: The foundation should fund Wikipedia. Maybe I'll tell them. |

I'd agree with mith.
$46 billion in Africa handled hands-on by such a philanthropist could very well move mountains.
It seems bad to poo-poo such actions, but couldn't Bill Gates have served us all better by not getting MS into anti-trust situations?
That's a question. |

Who cares that he monoplized MS products, its software, get a grip. Now those SOB pharmaceticul CEO's who patent AIDS and cancer meds and sell them for thousands of dollars a dose are evil people who are going straight to hell. Gates changed the world and made a pile of money doing so, no one was hurt by Windows monopoly (except maybe all you computer nerds), you could always buy a Mac. |

One of the rare times I agree with OH. There are a lot worse industries and "evil" corporations out there. Microsoft is not nearly as influential nor as powerful as it used to be. |

Right on, anyone out there can pick up a C++ book and start programming away. Except for the pot and magic mushrooms I grow, i can't really make AZT or other drugs in my basement. I've always like Bill Gates, there are definitly way more evil people out there. |

Gates says he has no interest in politics. Buffet is calling for the repeal of the estate tax which allows rich Americans to pass on cash to their children tax free. His own children aren't happy as he isn't leaving them very much.
Quote: |
I would hate to see the estate tax gutted," Buffett said at a Manhattan news conference with the Gateses about his donation.
"It's a very equitable tax," Buffett said. "It's in keeping with the idea of equality of opportunity in this country, not giving incredible head starts to certain people who were very selective about the womb from which they emerged." |
Well put!

Repealing the estate tax is one of the most un-american things to come along in awhile. Allowing estates to pass on generation to generation is basically bringing back the aristocracy, isn't that why the US fought a war? |

OH, isn't Buffett saying the opposite-- that he's in favor of continuing taxes which prohibit elites from passing down all their assets to children?
Bill Gates isn't perfect-- it's still a company and its interests are still in making money. At times Microsoft has bullied smaller companies and countries which can't afford its products. But overall, his contribution to the computing industry is incalculable, and the fact that he has now dedicated so much of his life to philanthropy is laudable.
