| In my adult class yesterday EVERY SINGLE student said that they dont want to watch thw WC anymore because Korea is out. With that kind of mentality, they didnt deserve to advance. Oh well, they missed one of the best games Ive ever seen and the best goal of this WC in the Arg-Mex game. |
One thing I'd like to point out (slightly off topic), is this kind of attitude by some (not all) Koreans is the same type of thing when it comes to stories about foreign teachers doing something that makes the news.
My point is, we wonder why everytime something happens, there is a backlash of hatred (pick whatever situation you'd like). I agree it's infintile and stupid.
Yet when people say they are happy the Koreans lost the game against the Swiss they get told to shut their mouths. (note: I wasn't part of those discussions but read one of the threads).
I guess those that said anything bad about the Korean soccer team better take out an insurance policy in case a mob of angry netcitizens decides to come and maul them. |

My kindergarten students were very matter of fact about it. They always tell me stuff as if I don't have any contact to the outside world and couldn't know it on my own. Yesterday they said, Korea lost. Switzerland got two points (in Korean -- let's face it, their English ability sucks).
I don't deal with any Koreans between the ages of 9 and 30, so that might be why I haven't heard any whining about the Swiss. My Korean friends expressed disappointment and dissatisfaction about the reffing, but nothing over the top, and certainly nothing about hating Swiss people or Switzerland.
I'm fairly sure the angry netizens and the people that most of you are talking about are teenagers, right? I hope so, anyway..... |

I had a student come in today and I asked him how his weekend was. First he said bad, because of Switzerland, but he quickly changed his mind and smiled. No no, I'm happy!
Why?
Because America not win!
I asked him why is that important to him. He just smiled... no answer, but he's just glad that America didn't make it to the next round. Fascinating.

Probably picked it up from his parents. |

Sounds like how a lot of people on this board felt about Korea losing though.... but I wish he would have given you an answer. I'd like to hear the reasoning. When I was around junior high age I liked to see the U.S. fail to do well in Olympic events. I think that was the other side of rooting for the underdog, though -- I didn't feel like it was fair that the U.S. got so many medals! I never felt like that about any other dominant countries though. |

Well, it all depends on the reason, doesn't it? I was glad the Americans were knocked out because I find their players quite arrogant. I really want the Italians to be knocked out because I hate their style of play and their whining, diving attitude.
Now, if I had wanted the Aussies to be knocked out because of that friggin' annoying Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! chant, I'd be worthy of derision. Much like some posters on here who dislike Koreans congregating and wearing the same color, or something. |

Just for argument's sake, if someone was to say they were happy the Koreans were knocked out because they found the players to be quite arrogant, that would be okay?
Just asking. |

I think it's the rabid nationalism, the immaturity etc, that gets to them. I'm pretty sure it's not the color and congregating. |
