Suddenly, earlier this week NONE of hte video files that we have downloaded of our favorite tv shows works.
Nothing...on our onboard hard drive AND our external. Also, I haven't been able to play dVDs on the computer.
BUT, and this is weird...cERTAIN videos CAN play.
1) Videos streamed from websites...no problem.
2) Downloaded videos of a show that I've played at with my friend still work.

FOOOOK!!! I think I just lost my external though...

However, ALL of our songs and records still play hunky doory.
It can't be my video card can it?

The only two causes
1) A few times the last couple weeks, our computer has been preeeeeetty hot. We don't leave it on when we're not here but it usually is on when we're at home.
2) I did a THOROUGH scan with avast! I am not sure how this would affect the files and drives though.

I don't konw WTF is going on.
I think i'm just going to have to blast this shit away.....sigh...

OK... couple questions...

Did they work before or is this your first try on this computer?
What software are you trying to use?
Do you have the codecs for the downloaded files installed? If they are newly downloaded perhaps you need to install the correct codec.
Did you try to use torrent files and only get the loader/header and NOT the video file itself?

.

More importantly, exactly what happens when you try to play them? Lock up? Error message? Sound but no video?

I don't know whaaat the fuuuuuuu...
NOW the shows on my computer WILL work.

before:
1) I would open windows explorer, and it would freeze. Then after a couple tries, I could get to the file and click it. It would load up but not play. sometimes it would not load up.
On real player, it said that "the file could not be played" but I had played those VERY same files LAST WEEK with no problem. When I would try to play them on my other players they wouldn't start and there would be no error window.

2) I have windows media player (+classic), winamp, real player.

3) I DID have the files for the codec.

You might want to run some system utilities.

Defrag, chkdisk (right click on the drive, select "tools" and do the scandisk and defrag from there).

Do you have any system utilities installed? Exectutive Software Diskkeeper, Registry mechanic are really good. Ccleaner (but that won't really help)...

Booting from the Windows CD lets you get into "COM" (old "DOS") "recovery console" and run a "chkdsk /r" this will check for bad sectors, and "chkdsk /f" to check all the system files in the Windows installation and repair them if necessary. This site has a good run down of things that can be done at the COM prompt. Run as many as seem pertinent to your situation.

All in all, some maintenance work may help.

I have VLC media player, and even when "real player" does not work, VLC works 99% of the time.

I second that! Very Happy VLC is now my official video player hands down. There is no other greater.
