anyone know of a decent optometrist in seoul (itaewon/hannam area)?

extremelyfinegirlofdenz and i are going to get some spectacles and we'd like to be pointed in the right direction.

denz

ps/ denz helpful hint #372

2 week disposable contacts will last in excess of 2 to 3 months if you take care of them. friendofdenz in australia is an optometrist. her rule of thumb: throw them away when they dont feel as comfortable. dont make acuvue richer than they already are.

Most of the time, they do the eye exams right there in the opticians shop, where you buy the glasses. The eye exam is numbers not letters, which was one of my worries. Hy eye exam however was pretty funny, because I wasn't 100% sure of all the numbers in Korean, so I held up fingers too.

by the way, glasses are CHEAP here, mine cost $300+( really bad eyes, not funky frames) in Canada, and 50,000 W here

This is GREAT to know! I have my prescription from California with me in case I need to get some more if I stay another year, but as my eye exam last year consited of the doctor just taking a picture of my eyes and then OVERprescribing my glasses strength, I'm a bit leery of the whole eye-doctor in Korea thing....

You're begging for a nasty eye infection there, if bacteria start a-growin'.

I'm just sayin'.

Google up a few pics and you'll see what I mean.

I'm backing up denz here. He's right - the two week replacement thing is a crock. Take good care of them - just as well as you would non-disposables, with disinfectant, protein removal goop - and they'll last 2x or 3x what the company wants.

In North America the contact lens companies instruct opticians to record how often you ask for refills. If you don't do it according to their schedule, the opticians are supposed to cut you off completely since you won't play by their rules. You can read about this on the corporate websites, where they give directions to the eye doctors.

How much for the exam itself, not including glasses. My life's been a bit blurry recently but not sure if I'll need them or not. Would like to get it check out, though

i ended up paying, erm...

frames: 30,000
lenses: 25,000 (super fine triple coated uv blah blah - you could get lenses and frames together for about 30,000 total if you don't mind looking like a korean elvis).

as far as i could tell the exam was free.

edict: god was angry at the price, while i was gobsmocked given how it was about a 5th of what i would pay in australia.

It's really amazing! Granted, I said how my lenses were too strong for what I needed, but I paid like only about 30,000 won all told and about 80,000 won for contact lenses. Then those ripped and I had to go to the eye doctor back home without insurance. That cost me maybe close to $200-275 (about W 240,000 - W330,000) once everything was finished with. But at least I knew then my prescription would be correct!
