Among the many superlatives associated with Hurricane Katrina can now be added this one: It produced one of the most extraordinary displays of scams, schemes and stupefying bureaucratic bungles in modern history, costing taxpayers up to $2 billion.

highlights?
-232Gs$ to a hotel owner who didn't have victims
-a mother who "watched her daughters drown" and claimed victim status
-mobile homes, costing $34,500 apiece, were supposed to provide temporary housing to hurricane victims. But after Louisiana officials balked at installing them inland, FEMA had no use for them. Nearly half of the $860 million worth of units ordered now sit at an airfield in Arkansas, where FEMA is paying about $250,000 a month simply to store them <taken from article>
Quite a distressing and disgusting list....but it IS good to see laypeople AND government officials get in on it.

One Louisiana Department of Labor clerk, Wayne Lawless, has been charged with issuing about 80 fraudulent disaster unemployment benefit cards in exchange for bribes of up to $300 an application |

Yes, I read all about this and several editorials where they rightly so called for the Bush government to step down and take responsibility for robbing the public treasury.
I find it soooo maddening that these "conservatives" are spending money like water, much of it without accountability and under secret directives or to public companies without any outside oversight or real competition.
I predict that when all is said and done, we will find out how bankrupt the American govt is and how massive the debt has become. I repeat, the Bush Administration is just stripping assets -- another Enron. But in this instance it is the American government who we trust not to work on a profit motive but with a "goodness" motive. They know no such motive other than how can I get my friends (and thus me) rich.
