It's a long story why it took so long to get my Visa #, but that's not important. I finally got it and will be able to mail my passport to my regional consulate (Chicago) Monday morning. I'm trying to avoid rescheduling my plane ticket, so I need some advice on what to do:
I have a ticket already bought to Korea because it is the return leg of my round trip ticket I bought when I finished my 1st job in Korea. It leaves on Sunday, July 9th for Chicago.
Can I send it FedEx Overnight from my home in KC and attach a FedEx Saturday Delievery return letter with my address on it? Will they send it back using that express service if I pay for it? I need the quickest way possible because they will be closed on July 4th.
Should I mail it and then fly to Chicago on Friday so I can pick it up and then stay until my Sunday flight?
Should I fly to Chicago as soon as possible with my passport and process it in person? |

When I did my first VISA back in '03, I mailed my stuff to Chicago, and if I remember correctly, came back in about 7 days. I used USPS Express registered/delivery confirmation/tracking everything. The one problem was that they didn't scan it in to the computers when it left Chicago so I could track it to Chicago, but it never said anything about leaving.
Your best bet, if you're really worried, is to phone them up, tell them it's on its way and fly there on Friday (I doubt they're open on Saturday) to pick it up. Hey, it's a 2-day holiday in Chicago!
Where ya from in KC? I grew up in Lee's Summit and haven't been back in a while. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Cheers and good luck.

When I needed my passport back quickly from Chicago, they said to come in person because they cannot guarantee what day they will be able to take it to the post office/FedEx/UPS. For example, it might be ready on Wednesday, but they might not get it out of their office until the next day. I ended up dropping it off on a Thursday late-afternoon and picking it up first thing Monday morning. |
