Howdy. I found these whilst perusing a freakin' hockey forum. A WHOLE BUNCH of neato shots from North Korea.

I'm a technical moron, and have no idea how to easily post a link, but i'll try to copy it by hand and then type it in correctly here. Definitely worth the look-see, if you're into that sort of thing:

That should work. Enjoy.

You know, as much as we foreigners complain about South Korea, myself included, we should consider ourselves lucky we don't have to deal with the likes of North Korea. Our lives could be a lot worse. Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

It doesn't sound like the photographer had ever been to South Korea.

Personally I was shocked because the photos didn't look quite as bad as I'd always imagined. The people in Pyongyang looked a lot better off than I'd imagined, and even the people in the countryside the photographer managed to get didn't look much worse than some of the old-generation South Koreans I've seen.

Plus I was startled by one brief comment about urban development in Pyongyang. Some old people didn't want to move out of their homes, so the government left them alone and built around them. In Seoul, the government hires gangsters to chase those people away so the neighbourhoods can be bulldozed.

(Note I'm not saying things are good there, just that they're a lot better than I'd imagined the places you're not allowed to photograph would look like.)

Terrific photos. I was intrigued by the garbage cans. If communism can't eradicate cheesiness, what good is it?

I understood that this was just the official gov't line the photographer was given, just an false excuse as to why those people were living in such derelict shacks in the first place (ie. and not "fancy condos" like in the west), plus that was a 'forbidden' picture anyway - shouldn't have been taken as he said. In other words, the response about the old people staying put was propaganda from the tour guide to save NK face.

Maybe, but that supposes they know something about how urban renewal is carried out in South Korea.

Personally, I like this one the best:

Quote:
Kiosk for locals, most of the time they sell lemonade, forigers are given a plastic cup, locals get porcelain mugs, that are washed in a bucket of water after use.

And in the photo you can see stacks and stacks of paper cups....are they expecting a party in the near future?????

I remember about 2 years ago in a discussion about NK there was a link to a fantastic story by a group of expats in SK (canadian or aussies I think) who did the trip to the north to see the "arirang festival"... can't seem to find the thread now.

The pictures were not so many nor so good, but the back story was fantastic. The guys freaked the hell out of their "guides" because they spoke fluent korean and started talking up to random people.

They also did the DMZ tour from the north!

Photos here are really good... of course he does not get the really ugly part: the re-education camps, slums, black markets. famine is largely over now thx to south aid, but food is still scarce.

Bear in mind, he saw only what he was allowed to.
The malnutrition in the countryside amongst those not affiliated to the party is quite severe.

Remember, North koreans are divided into reliables, questionables, and prisoners.
seen plenty horrific pictures from outside the cities:)
