My friends and I were talking about marriage recently. Specifically about married foreingers in Korea. Basically we came to the conclusion that most foreingers in Korea that are married would be males that are married to either Korean women or other foreign women.
I'm not actually interested in each and everyone's gender/marriage status from a post. I'm just really interested in the poll. So...here goes! |

I remember reading the stats somewhere that actualy most (2/3rds) of the 'international' marriages in korea are between korean males and foreign brides. However they tend to be a lot from '3rd world' countries. Korean women marry japanese and chinese more.
I'll see if I can find the stats. |

So are the Korean men who object to international marriages objecting to only white people "taking" their women, and are more accepting to other Asians "taking" their women? And do these kinds of people okay with Korean men marrying women from under-developed countries?
I wonder if anyone has done surveys/studies about this. |

Actually I think it's because of a lack of females due to gender selection... I'm sure you 'white men' have a horrible burden in your own relationships from the odd small minded person I'm sure that your trials and tribulations must be as bad as a black man with a Korean women, or indeed the mail-order brides that are already here. |

A friend of mine who's married in Japan told me that 10% of all marriages there last year were interracial. |

OP.
How on earth did you manage to complete those poll options?? I would have been starting over about 10 times!!
Just to add to the stats......13% of marriages in Korea last year were international. I know. A huge amount when you think how homogenous Korea is.
However, a very few percent of that involved Korean females marrying foreign men. The vast majority were Korean men marrying foreign women.
Put lonely Jeolla-do farmer and the internet together and you can see what I mean. |

Um, wouldn't there be the same amount of married women as married men? This doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I can say that at our office we have several men married to Korean women, and only one woman married to a Korean man. So, I'm surprised that the stats claim the opposite. Of course, "foreign" in our office is North American or European, not other Asian ethnicities. |

I don't think that is legal in Korean, so that is not really a possibility. |

How can you be suprised? There are around 30 million Korean men and about 5,000 or so foreign men. Well the number of foreign men in Korea may be off a bit, either way it is a lot less than 30 million.
Furthermore I doubt the Korean census bureau counts the number of foreigners married to other foreigners, so that might skew the numbers a little. |

It is hard to generalize Korean people. And also it depends on the Westerner and how they blend in with Koreans. If you stand out so much as a foreigner, then that increases your problems, probably. I have heard that some Korean men get upset if you date Korean women. But then again, some Korean men who talked to me and found out I was not married and in my 30s said they would like to set me up with someone. I wasn't in a hurry to just date any Korean girl. But I guess you also have to factor in another thing some Western men's taste in women is different than that of Korean males. For example, if a woman is a tiny bit chubby and she has curves and is tall, the Western guy might think she looks awesome especially if she has a nice smile and face. The Korean guys might overlook her and that would be their loss, maybe or not. Obviously, there are plenty of women who are curious about Western men who are different just as some white women are interested in black men in North America. Plus, many Koreans want to learn English and having a nice Western guy as a boyfriend would help.
I am a newbie... I've only been here for a months, but so far I have found the men and women very friendly to me. They didn't act like they would object if I had a Korean girl. That goes for both genders. But some wouldn't date one, because their parents would object. Younger and progressive Koreans generally care less about it. If a girl has very strict parents and doesn't readily approach in a very friendly way, I would keep away. That is my take... What do you all think? |

There is an option. It's 'other'. |

I'm in the 'other' category. I used to be married to a foreign woman (foreign being Canadian; I'm American) but that went to hell some time back and I am now single. |
