Edmonton has the second largest urban park in North America. The River Valley is basically like this in both directions to the city limits.
The skyline is situated right on the lip of a valley so it lends itself to photography. I hear it's been used in a lot of movies.
One of my favourite bars, the Strat. It's been home to creepy old alcoholics and university students for decades. When Chretien came through Edmonton a few years ago, he mentioned driving past the Strat and remembered that his grandfather used to drink there. Looks pretty much the same, though everything else is more developed.
Today.
Whyte Ave, our version of Hongdae.
Riot city.
Still the largest mall in North America. I grew up less than a kilometer from it and I hate the thing.
World's stupidest cowboy boot.
Even dumber than the boot: a baseball bat. This was actually made with taxpayers' money.
Edmonton has one of the most isolated major punk scenes in Canada and has created some of the best bands. Here are the Wednesday Night Heroes, arguably Canada's best punk band. They might be coming to Korea next spring.
The ska scene is dying down but it remains one of the few ska-punk-free zones in the world. This is Mad Bomber Society, a band whose shirt I always wear when I'm travelling by plane.
How dare I forget: snow. We don't get snowstorms like that anymore, thank you very much SUV drivers.

stakay,
I want to move to your hometown. Visited Australia once, and fell in love
with the place. Your pictures bring back that feeling.
What a great country! |

RT: Quite an impressive cowboy boot.
Great pictures, all! Makes me miss N. America.
N. Ireland pics are kinda scary. I have friends there, but doesn't seem an inviting place. But there's Guiness... |

The baseball bat pisses me off on so many levels.
1) It was made by the municipal government.
2) It's ugly.
3) Does Edmonton even have a baseball team anymore?
This is way better, the giant easter egg in Vegreville outside of Edmonton.

| Edmonton sure seems like a strange place. Are there any other giant objects? |

Where I grew up....outback Australia...this is the town's main drag...
What it looks like a few kilometers outside town...
These lakes are about an hour away...
And finally, this is where I was living prior to Korea...

thanks RT...
I became a strat man after a terrible, terrible stint being dragged by my "real friend" to "The Bu" (Club Malibu? You remember that purgatorial nightmare?) I became so much happier at the strat...even got a song about it.
MBS....yeah, I saw them up at North Country Fair back in 2001 when I played there. Fan-damn tastic band...no fucking doubt.
thanks for the pics RT. I have never seen that baseball bat though...where is it?
Other big things in Alberta?
Enjoy this crap:
Actually, I was going to find some pictures...but that would just take too much time.
I STRONGLY encourage everyone to visit this wiki travel site:
http://wikitravel.org/en/Off_the_beaten_path_in_Alberta#Big_Stuff_Tour
Actually, maybe this site has better pics!!!!:
http://www.roadsideattractions.ca/alberta.htm
Enjoy the drivel! |
