I have a week off end of Aug/beg of Sep and am on a really tight budget. Would a bus to Mokpo and a walk along the SW coast be worthwhile? I'd kind of like to simply wander but I know it will be dang hot then. But I have heard that part of the coast is worth a visit. ANyone with any serious coast experience here? I'd like to walk and walk for days but not up hill and down dale at that time of year.

What about going island hopping on some of the smaller islands around there? Or a bigger one like Jeju or Goeje?
I have done the long-distance walking thing, both overland in a straight-ish type line and island hopping (the Gulf Islands in BC) and found the islands much more satisfying. More variety, less traffic, a better sense of accomplishment. |

In the summer of 2002 a friend and I took our bicycles and rode from Mokpo to Busan. It was very worth it. A walking trip (or better if you can scrounge a bike) is a nice way to spend a week down that way. Hiking along the coast would be pretty kewl but pretty HOT. Take a straw hat and your sunscreen! |

Walk around Jeju's coastal roadway.
Pay 21,000 won for a 4-hour ferry from Wando to Jeju
or 23,000 won for a 5-hour ferry from Mokpo to Jeju
(i know the prices because I just came those ways this weekend, no reserved tickets, just walked up and bought)
I would walk around Jeju in a heartbeat. And you could dip into the ocean to cool down when wanted. Tons to see. Plenty of people cycling it too. Backpack a cheap light tent and you're set!
I rented a car (135,000 won for two days, 48 hours - shared between two people is under 35 thou a day! with cheap LPG costing only 15 thou per person for the whole trip) and did the coast, but I would have enjoyed it even more cycling or walking, one of which I shall do later this summer or next spring.
You would not regret it. It is more scenic than one could imagine in Korea. Blew me away. It's pretty flat too for the most part, not many hills unless you wanna climb Halla in the middle. Skip Geoje, as its coastal road is MURDER in terms of hills: cool to motorbike and great vistas to see but killer to walk, believe me, I did just part of it, barely. |
