I've got a little 40 gig hdd in my machine that's probably on it's last legs. It's the only drive in the box. I was thinking of replacing it with a 250 gig. I'm wondering if I can just set up a 40 gig partition on the new drive and copy the old drive onto it. If I then install the new drive alone, will the system boot like before or do I have to do a complete reinstallation of Windows (something I'd prefer to avoid)? Thanks in advance for any help. |

What you're talking about is called cloning. It copies your existing drive to a new drive. You'll then have to set the new drive as your main drive.
Anyway, I just did this. I used a program called Acronis. It's got a free trial period, so you can download it and use it. It worked like a charm for me.
Also, you can follow the instructions here if you need help.
