I think this thread is really silly. Who cares what you, I, or the Koreans think? I have yet to meet a Korean who said, "Eat my damn french fries cracker! And you better hand over half that hamburger before I get angry!". Just let them know your preferences, problem solved Wink

I guess you've never heard of the classic song 그래양키강사놈들아너희햄버거와감자튀김을내게도좀주라구?

It's ingrained in the culture!

When I came here in 1996, I went to Lotteria in Yeosu with a group, partly Korean and partly Canadian. I made the mistake of ordering a side of corn rather than fries, which sucked. One of the Koreans had fries but she didn't eat them. When I asked if I could have them, she dumped them in the garbage. I thought for the longest time that Koreans guard their food from others.

As for the OP, Dev already knows how I feel about his posts, and blaseblasphemer and I_am_wrong have already summed up how I feel about his thread, but this quote out of flotsam threw me for a loop! Shocked

Before I even waste my time telling you why it's totally wrong, do you stand by this statement flotsam?

Absolutely.

I applaud Dev for unearthing a serious threat to the expat way of life. And I think some precise, reflective and pertinent debate has ensued. Can you imagine the consequences if people continue to eat their fries together? It'll have the same decaying effect that eating curries with utensils has had on the fabric of western society since 1857: people eating cheeseburgers with chopsticks and puddings with straws and meatballs with corn-on-the-cob forks and sashimi with shovels...chaos.

But you didn't think they were just going to let the mutiny drop, did you? Coolie-wog bastards...

But we, we, are so much more at risk. Over here, isolated without the spiritual asssurance of our home communities. One day, all of a sudden, you may find yourself splitting open your bag of fries and blithely sharing the tasty tubers with your Korean girlfriend and then you will catch your reflection in the shiny metal Mickie-D counter--there it will be, staring back at you, a huge, pale, oval, EGG. And creeping up behind you, smiling sweetly, your girlfriend holding a rake-sized whisk.

And only then will you realize the real Yellow Peril.

Heed Dev people: don't go native.

The West has already started drinking yoghurt with straws nowadays (was in Asia long before back home). It has already started. Asia will have destroy the moral fabric of Western eating !!!

Germ Theory really hasn't caught on here. I mean, fans can kill you but apparently sticking your saliva-coated chop sticks into every dish on the table is nothing to worry about.

More Up to date Koreans will use neutral chopsticks in order to put food on their plate. So it depends with whom you hang out.

Then there's the wet towel before the meal thing. A wet rag doesn't kill germs.

No
But your hands are clean of dirt and sweat, it is part of a custom, it doesn't necessarily mean to be efficient.

I've had Koreans tell me "well, if someone's sick we give them their own separate bowls to eat from" but people are often most contagious before the symptoms start showing up.

Breathing the air around you is more contagious then eating the food you share, in a sense that many more people used the same air before you.

I enjoy both way of dining.

The only problem i have is when we go to a restaurant where you are meant to have one dish only, that i prefer to keep it that way.

This is the problem with a number of people who go to live in Korea.
They choose to criticise the ways of the culture they're in.
Remember you are guests in another country. It is not your place to criticise what they have done for centuries.

Now I have been fighting the good fight against the critcism here as it seems rather silly. But they have been killing little baby girls in India for a while now. Maybe I shouldn't criticize that either. No, just because something has been done for ever and you are in another country doesn't mean you just have to accept everything without criticism.
