Next week my girl and I will take a day trip into TJ.

Any suggestions for what to see, do, and avoid?

I spent a day there. The missus found a GAP that had jeans so freakin cheap it was unbelievable.
That's about it unless you want mexican rugs and stuff!
It's a bit of a dive really but just cool to say you've been to Mexico.
Go for Mexican food!

I stayed one night there in 2004. My wife was stunned at how ramshackle and dirty the place was. To me, it seemed more like a large African village along the lines of Abeokuta.

Good fun thoygh: try and find the brass section.

Went across for a day awhile back.

If your girlfriend wears shorts (and heck, even if she doesn't), she can expect to be groped by guys selling ankle bracelets. They don't hesitate one bit, just go right on up and start putting them on ya. Guess they figure if they can put them on you, you'll buy it.

Men will not hesitate to make cat-calls, whistle, make inappropriate gestures to and say derogatory things about your girlfriend, regardless of your presence. It's worse since they tend to travel in packs.

Let's see, lots of donkeys on street corners spray painted black-and-white stripes with a colorful wagon hitched up, so you can pay to get your picture taken with a 'zebra.'

And of course, don't drink the water. And watch out for kidnappers. And drug lords.

But if you're like me, you gotta go for the experience of it all! Wouldn't take it back for the world, but it's better to be prepared.

Ensenada and Rosarito are good suggestions. Try the Mercado Negro (fish market) in Ensenada for great seafood. There are also cheap cruises and fishing expeditions. Rosarito is nice too and has some great nightclubs and cafes (they rent jet ski's, horses, and 4-wheelers right behind IGGY'S).

TJ is far from a shackle town (unless you venture outside into the barrios).

If you want to stick to TJ, Plaza Rio is a nice place to shop, eat and even catch a movie in the luxurious VIP cinema.

Also, try the Divertido Mundo for bowling and an arcade.

Otherwise, Revolucion is the best place for tourists.

Cautionary note, avoid the top left of Revolucion (left of the Arch), at Hotel Nelson, because this is an area known for rateros and dealers.

Even though all places accept dollars, yy advice would be to change your dollars into pesos, so you can get good value for your money. You can do this at La Linea or at some of the numerous Casa de Cambios all over the place. Currently, you can buy 11.25 pesos to the dollar ($1 : 11.25), so you're more or less saving 12.5% if you buy something with the pesos price.

Food is cheap and you can get some good deals if you haggle.

if you drive in, get the Mexican insurance. It's less than 20 bucks and your US insurance won't cover you.

DO NOT bring a rental car into Mexico.

There is a bull fighting ring where the border meets the ocean, You'll see it from the road as it turns south to Rosarito. And on your way back on that road you need to make a confusing exit, seemingly in the wrong direction, to get back to the border. I can't remember exactly where, anyone?

I drove the distance from TJ to Ensenada many times, its an excellent coast drive. TJ? just walk around. Go to Revolution and get some Kaluha. Eat drink and get merry there. The Mexicans do hospitality well.

We went to TJ yesterday and had a great time looking at pottery and paintings near Revolution Avenue.

We stayed there for about 3 hours and drove back to San Diego. There was a huge line of people trying to get back into the US on foot and it was moving very slowly. In the car we didnt have to wait long.

I'd recommend going there.

I used to live in San Diego. All I can say is get the heck out of there before the sun goes down. The freaks come out at night. Hide your wallet in a very safe place. There are many pick-pockets.
