Hi all

Have read through all the FAQs etc about Korea, and got as much info as possible... having moved to Thailand I know that you can only gain so much knowledge from a Forum, that nothing quite prepares you for moving to such a country and thats part of the experience.

What I would like to know is has anyone lived in both Korea and Thailand and what are the main differences? I've adjusted to life here in Thailand (as has my 8 year old daughter), so would I find things any harder in Korea?

yes i lived in Thailand and i am now in Korea, main differences i find are the food, the sun, and the relaxed atmosphere, dont get me wrong Korea is cool but Thailand is better for the relaxed aspect.

By the beach having some food and a beer etc, Thai is not as westernised as Korea in some ways.

Teaching jobs are plenty in Thailand but you will only make about a third of what you will get in Korea although the cost of living is cheaper, way cheaper and you dont encounter as much stare and looks in Thailand and they are mostly greeted with a big smile.

If i could get the same money i get here i would be in Thailand and oh yeah "song cran", thai new year festival, all based around throwing water at everyone for a couple days, what a great time... must be experienced....

I think what is making me consider Korea is the money... knowing I could be doing the same job (that I love) and actually making some money off it. And I haven't exactly fallen in love with Thailand.

I've also lived in both countries and must say that I prefer my lifestyle in Korea, which is the opposite of most of the opinions I've heard and read about. I enjoy spending money freely. I like not having to risk my life on a motorcycle in order to get anywhere. I like the infamous four seasons of Korea I like high speed internet and like understanding a little of the language.
My concerns however would be for your daughter. It's much easier for kids to adjust to living in Thailand in my opinion.

lol i hear you, had friends in Thailand and one of the girls was blonde and endowed pretty well and she used to get a lot of stares and comments so i understand that.

In Korea all foreigners get stared at, you get used to it.

Defo if you want to make some money you can do it here if you get the free rent deal and live within your limits, you can live comfortably and have a good time.

The hours are longer in Korea though but thats what you get the money for, also privates are a help.

Yes, I was only questioning that because I knew one or two people who brought kids with them to Korea. In both cases they left mid contract because their kids simply hated it. The mother would be teaching at odd hours and home schooling the kids between teaching at an academy.
Something to consider seriously and do some research on in my opinion.

Yes definately my daughter is my first consideration which is why I'm doing some research now. Life isn't perfect for her here, she has a much longer day at school here than at home (NZ) and the Thai kids haven't really accepted her, but she still takes it all in her stride. I would have to teach at a school that my daughter could attend as theres no way I'd find time to work and homeschool! But a lack of holidays could be a problem... kids need time to be kids.
