But in any case Eagles it's late and I'm tired of talking bollocks. In all honesty - if you're happy believing what you believe - more power to you, rock on. The one thing that annoys me about you and your behaviour is this need to push a religious belief system and act as missionary. Why can't you just be content with your inner peace and leave it at that?

Ok, fair enough, it seems like you are being serious.
Why don't you start a thread on it and I will join in. There are many Christians on the board, so they might like to add to it.
|
So what's with the Evangelical's missionary zeal?

How about a thread title "what is up with *some* Christians?"
As for the zeal, I assume it comes from the sense of being part of a large project. That's why a lot of people who don't like evangelists also don't like Esperantists. It's the "stop-telling-me-about-an-issue-that-I-don't-give-a-damn-about" kind of feeling.
Your video goes to an even better one!

For evangelical Christians, mission work is a tenet of their faith. |

Did you read the quotes that prompted it? I'm hoping it will be more productive than other exchanges between 5Eagles. |

Ha! In the English version Homer says something like, "Marge, I think I hate Ted Koppel. No, on second thought I find him witty and informative." |

I agree with one of the posters earlier. Not all "Christians" try to force feed it to you. Jesus certainly didn't force anyone to listen to him. People willingly came to him because of his holiness. If you think fiveeagles is conducting a form of Christian "trolling" ignore him like you would any other "troll".
I have noticed the tendency, whether warranted or not, that fiveeagles/rteacher get attacked more than others. Maybe they bring it on themselves through their style of delivery or because the way they present their belief's. Maybe they do this on purpose to get more attention to their posts. Maybe all the negative attention they receive make them act more defensive. Maybe other posters who attack them get easily offended and put off by their strong belief system. Maybe other posters have been offended by other Christians/Religious types in the past and take it out on rteacher/fiveeagles. Maybe fiveeagles/rteachers beliefs are usually the punch line of some joke so its easy to join in and bash them. Maybe its all or some of the above.
Check out my sleep paralysis/dream thread. What happens? As soon as rteacher chimes in people must go off on him and add nothing to the subject. I have seen the same thing happen to fiveeagles in other threads. Let them state their viewpoint and if you don't agree with them say so. Otherwise ignore them. Don't insult them.
I haven't researched fiveeagles posts, but from what I have read a lot of times he is more or less on defense more than trying to force others to agree with him. Maybe in some cases turning the other cheek would be more appropriate as opposed to being defensive. Sometimes, whether he realizes it or not, fiveeagles sarcasm can come off as arrogant. It is often seen as a fleeing tactic and it doesn't translate well on a message board. I don't think he intends for it to be that way, it just translates that way on a message board. Maybe I should of addressed him in a pm before saying this on the board.
I hope I am not pointing out the splinter in fiveeagles eye while I have a plank in mine.
As for sharing his personal beliefs. That is part of being a Christian. This doesn't mean you force it on un-open ears. Christ himself made an analogy in Matthew 7:6 talking about this. Maybe I misinterpreted it, but I believe he is referring to evangelism. Share your beliefs and if you encounter resistance turn the other cheek. It is best to let others attack you and go on about your business. People will either accept what you say or not. This is putting faith in the holy spirit as opposed to trying to force it in yourself.
Oh by the way happeningthang, nowhere man will kill you for putting this in the current event forum.

FIrst of all, most Christians I know I don't actually know they are Christians Most Christians do not even talk about Chrisitanity, especially when they realize I am agnostic. They do give that sort of pity look though, which is annoying. Then again, I give the same look to sociology majors too
Second, FiveEagles and Rteacher love it. Rteacher loves it because he can go on and on about his religion. He can't usually do this in real life (and apparently doesn't from what some people say). FiveEagles, like any good *fundi* Christian, feeds off persecution. THey love it, probably makes them feel closer to Jesus (that's just an opinion ofcourse). Don't feel sorry for them or put down the people that attack (well a couple to go out of their way to attack, but most don't) because it is what those two want and if you started asking people to stop attacking, FiveEagles and Rteacher would probably get mad at you
Finally...

I am perfectly sure that Christians have just as "un-open ears" as everyone else. Actually, in my opinion, the basic nature of Christianity leads me to believe Christians have much more "un-open ears" as you put it. |

Exactly guys. Thank YOU!!
I can share my beliefs about anything, but generally, If I meet resistance in that people don't want to hear it, I can humor them and SHUT my mouth. It's not limited to religious types, in anyway, but to my mind it demonstrates either a lack of respect or awareness.
And those Christians who don't trumpet the fact are usually much better at convincing people there's something to their faith. A pair of sisters I knew back home, were the most upbeat, generous and life loving spirits I've ever met. I worked with one and socialised with them both. It took me a year to find out they were committed Christians (still don't know the denomination). Point is... it wasn't important. How they lived their life, and how they treated others was.
After a while you have to ask, just who is it that these guys are trying to convince? |

In general, and you might not believe this, I don't share my faith with most people. I play a lot of basketball and haven't talked to anyone about Jesus who haven't asked. Like you have said, I keep it inward.
However, on other times, I do evangelise with other people. Where I have seen people give their lives to Christ and have changed in dramatic ways. It all depends on timing and season.
Why do I talk about my Christian perspective on this board? It is because i believe there is a dangerous precedent that is being put forth. There is an element of those who hate Bush and try to undermine the war on terror. And there are those who want to push God out of the classroom. There are topics, but I believe these are the main topics that I have talked about.
I believe I should voice an opinion on these topics. Some may view it as evangelism, but I view it as social justice. Why do I seem to be the only one speaking out on such issues, maybe because many Christians are bound by fear and thus not speaking out on such issues. Many Christians are in sin and don't feel like they have the authority to speak on such issues. While others feel like the Fonz and you. A quiet faith is stronger than a loud one.

In some cases, I have the upmost respect for Christians like this and know that they have a big impact on people's lives. I was impacted by a boss of mine who brought gentleness and kindness into the workplace. He didn't speak of his faith, but lived it. However, there were others who spoke truth into my life that pierced my heart to know that I was a sinner. Without both, I would still be the person I once was. Not everyone is called to be an evangelist. Most Christians are going to win people to Christ, by friendship. It's one of the most powerful tools of Christianity and I am glad it has touched your life.
Have you ever heard of Bonhoeffer, Happeningthing? He was one of the few Christian ministers who spoke out against the evil of Hitler. He was eventually killed for his faith, but he made a stand against a wicked man and a evil government. He didn't do it because he thought it was cool to be persecuted. He did it because he thought it was right. Likewise with many leaders who faced danger and persecution. They didn't do it because they loved the danger, they did it because they knew they had to take a stand.
Maybe some person love to be perscuted or hated, in which I can't understand...RT does seem to like it. When you called me an idiot and I think it was the first thing you said to me. It didn't make me do a little dance and think...yeah, this is great. It hurts man. Likewise do all the other words that are harsh or twisted that are intended to hurt. However, I am not going to back down because of intimidation or anger. Generally, I use jokes or paradoxes to reflect their anger. If this is seen as defensiveness or arrogance then I apologize. I am not perfect and I have a long ways to go.
That being said, I will leave if Dave tells me to. So if you want me to go, then tell Dave to pull the plug on my existence here. Or if he wants me to tone it down, then by all means, I will respect that. |

I apologize. Upon reading the post "un-open ears" doesn't sound like what I intended. I meant someone who doesn't want to hear it. Someone who has said no thanks, not interested or gives the look like they are dis-interested. You can sense if someone doesn't want to discuss a topic. If thats the case I move on to something else. I don't want to make someone feel awkward about it. I have the same feelings about other topics so its not like I am saying I am unique in that regard. I was just saying I don't force my beliefs on others. If we are in a discussion about it I will share and listen to what they believe. I don't try to change their beliefs, but if they are open to a discussion I will talk about it. It is not something I share with everyone I meet. I don't try to force it and I understand a lot of christians do force it. A lot of christians do steer conversations just so they can talk about their beliefs. I find that annoying and its not at all geniune. Some christians can come off as arragont, know-it-alls. This annoys me too. I am certainly not claiming that I don't have my faults like everyone else. So if I came off like that I didn't intend to.

I would say those people were being genuine as opposed to forcing it. I agree with this. Some christians force it and don't do it out of love, but do it because they feel they are obligated to. They feel it is a chore and not a blessing to share what they have experianced. I haven't always followed christianity, and if you read some of my previous threads you know I am still struggling with conquering my own personal demons. Therefore I just share what I am going through with others if they want to listen. If not I can have a "normal" conversation.
Sometimes telling people you are a christian before you get to know them can be a hinderance. They think you are this nutball and distance themselves from you. It has happened to me a couple of times, but I am fine with that. If they weren't that open to get to know me as a person before labeling me, I don't think I would of had that meaningful of a friendship anyway. It just gets annoying when you get blamed for something other "christians" have done. I think I have experianced the same look you are referring to laogaiguk. It is annoying and I certainly don't try to make someone feel awkward if they express something I don't believe in. I owe them respect like anyone else. |

I was most impressed by the fact that C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Anthony DeMello were Christian rather than that guy at our high school that would come in at lunch to have a religious debate. If it was just that guy I don't think I would ever have been impressed. Since religion or lack of it is a pretty personal but important matter, people who seem to have everything in order but don't go around advertising it are like people with nice, well-paying jobs that just make money and live well, vs. people from Amway who don't make much but spend all their time talking about making money. If you know what I mean. |
