Hi there,

Just curious what it's like for any of you gay expats living in Korea. My girlfriend and I are planning to move there in about a month, probably to Seoul, and while I know Korea is still conservative when it comes to sexuality, I was hoping to hear about people's actual experiences with being out/or not, community, homophobia, nightlife, etc...

Just looking for some insights!

You can walk around holding hands or arm-and-arm and Korans won't bat an eye. You can share the same bed and your boss will just think you're just roommates being practical. You can go to the public sauna and scrub each other down. You can even grope each other's *beep* and asses.

Of course you're not really lesbian... Rolling Eyes

I dont see what the problem is here? Im my tribe in the Naki everyone was happy and gay. These days it really saddens me that people are told they can no longer be gay. Hey as my mother would say if youre happy then its alright to be gay. In my tribe we all slept in one bed, it makes more sense, because beds are really expensive.

there is a big community here and although it turns some ajummas heads...I have never had a problem with my sexuality in public.

Just don't come out to your employer if you are teaching children. A rumor will get around and there is always a possiblity of being fired.

I guess, if you were a gay dude in Korea, having a KBF
would be less painful then in western countries.

Yeah, I'd guess that being gay in Korea would be the same as being gay back home. A lot of ass-ramming and redecorating going on.

God, I'm clever.

Since Ive been in Korea I have noticed that there are few gay people here. Back home everyone was gay, but here Im lucky if I can get a smile from anyone.

While it's true that men and women are a lot more physically affectionate with eachother here than back home - holding hands, full-frontal leaning on eachother, etc. That should not be confused with acceptance of homosexuality. It's absolutely not acceptable here.

I have worked with two female couples both years that I have been here and they didn't have any serious problems that I know of.

That's not the case everywhere. If you tell your boss and it turns out he or she is a shit bag then they might use it against you to try to screw you out of things that you deserve or threaten to fire you. However, if that's the type of boss he or she is that could happen anyway.

If I were you I would definately come and live with my girlfriend and just not make it directly known to your Korean co-workers or boss but not deny it to the foreign staff. You don't have to lie to anyone about it but definately don't discuss it as freely as you would at home.
