Osaka---stayed at a capsule hotel near one of central the subway stations. It wasn't bad...10,000 times better than the hostel in Kyoto. Gave us a nice robe to wear, had a huge sauna, lockers etc.
Kyoto---book ahead. no matter what anyone says...book ahead. There are some really nice inexpensive backpackers guesthouses/hostels and some real dives. |

I have been to kyoto 3 times and each time stayed at khouse which is a backapackers place but very clean and one of the best hostels i have ever stayed at...
Super cheap for japan as well
Problem is that it has become so popular you need to book well in advance at times...

Fukuoka doesn't have a hostel, but there is always the Green (something) Capsule.
The threads on visa runs for Japan have excellent information for both Fukuoka and Osaka.
In Tokyo, I went all out and got a hotel. If you book it online, you can save as much as 30% on your hotel accomodation.
Hiroshima has a youth hostel where I stayed, but can't recall the name anymore. |

Next cheapest is probably the Dazaifu Hostel(I think might be mentioned in the LP guide) which is 2800Yen (29,000Won), but they can only hold 24 ppl. So, you might be SOL once you get there. And it's a *beep* to get to, or so I've heard.

Dazaifu's number is +81-(0)92-922-8740, if you want to call ahead. I've never called, but I'm sure that they speak enough english to give directions or whatnot. It's a traveller's hostel |

We just stayed here - it was much more like a hostel then a hotel, but it was cheap. It wasn't right downtown, but the subway is quick, the area around the place is kind of charming/quiet, and the owners were friendly.
It's near Ueno, which is the station you'll have to get to if you want to take the Keisei train back to the airport, easy enough. If that's the case, you can save a buck if you buy your returning train ticket at the hotel rather than at the train station.
