i was wondering if anyone has in the past gone to thailand with camping gear and just slowly made there way around the country sleeping in there tent. (and on occasion getting a room)
Is tenting common or even allowed on the beaches??
From what I see on the net there are a few places that say you can camp but I am wondering if anyone has first hand knowledge of the subject. |

Camping is allowed - and frequently done - at the national parks.
On Phuket try the national parks on the north end of Bang Tao Beach - and north end also of Nai Yang Beach. I've seen people camping there quite frequently. Facilities may be limited at some places - on Bang Tao the toilets are often locked. Much better overall facilities (and just a nicer area - trees/shade) - at Nai Yang. |

A friend and I camped on Hat Mai Khao, and it was great! Tent was provided by the bungalow resort, and cost 100baht a night. I loved that beach, absolutely massive and pretty much deserted. Good place to watch the planes coming in, and if you're there at the right time you might even see the sea turtles on the beach coming to lay their eggs.  |

| I have seen campers on the beach in Trang. In most resort towns public showers are available for 10 baht. |

| Mind you, a tent works like a convection oven this time of year. You'll be waking up at 5 am to see if your own hamhocks are ready for breakfast. |

What about sand fleas? I know in parts of the Caymans they're a big reason why you don't see lots of people on the beaches at night. |

Sand Fleas are pretty much a beach-by-beach issue, but it's hard to get info on that before you arrive.
Meaning that the bungalows, etc... in an area infested are unlikely to tell you they're there.
If you really wanna camp, head north to the mountainous areas.
Khao Yai is the closest to BKK.
Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai.
Perhaps Pai? I don't know the North as well as I do the south. |
