The New TOEIC?Test...Coming Soon!

Each week ESL Pro Systems presents tips and strategies to help our readers improve their English.
This week we are discussing upcoming changes to the TOEIC?Test.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The TOEIC ?Test is the world's most popular business-English proficiency exam, and over 4.5 million people worldwide register for it annually. TOEIC?test scores are used by more than 5,000 organizations around the world.

Are you aware that a new version of the TOEIC?Test is currently being developed? Educational Testing Service (ETS? is planning to launch the new test in late 2006. Pilot testing of the new test will be soon carried out in several countries around the world. The new Speaking and Writing sections will first be offered in Korea and Japan in the fourth quarter of 2006, with a phased launch planned for the rest of the world after that.

~ Why develop a new version of the test?

Over ten years of ETS?research on the English language and how people actually communicate confirmed the need for a new proficiency test that better reflects English language tasks likely to be encountered in business contexts. Therefore, the TOEIC?Test is being redesigned to include authentic Reading and Listening tasks in addition to new Speaking and Writing sections.

~ How will the new test be delivered?

The revised Listening and Reading sections will continue to be administered through paper-and-pencil format. The changes to these two sections are as follows:

lengthening some of the listening and reading questions

the inclusion of accents from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia

introducing reading tasks based on two interrelated passages

reducing the number of photograph-based questions

eliminating error-recognition questions

The Speaking and Writing sections will be delivered via the Internet and will complement the Listening and Reading sections by providing a direct measure of productive skills for score users and English-language learners.

The scoring system for the test will remain almost the same: 5 to 495 for each section of the test and 10 to 990 for the total test score. However, a new scoring scale for the Speaking and Writing sections will be introduced in 2006. Additional improvements to the TOEIC?Test include enhanced score reports that will provide performance feedback within a test section and identify strengths and weaknesses in specific skill areas.

ESL Pro Systems will be closely monitoring these changes to the TOEIC?Test and, as usual, will be one of the first publishers to offer high-quality preparation materials for the newly revised test. In the meantime, be sure to have a look at the QuickStart Study Pack for the TOEIC?Test.
