I'm hoping some of the tech savvy folks around here can help me out...
I'm trying to do some video editting, but I'm not having much luck. My computer either freezes, locks up, or I get a message that my '3dfxvs' video driver has stopped responding. So, I thought I'd update the driver to see if that helps solve the problem...not as easy as it seems. The pages I've found have hundreds of drivers listed, and I have no idea which one I need. 
Here are my specs:
Intel Pentium 4 / 2.4 MHz
1.5 GB Ram
XP / SP 2 (Korean)
Video Card: 3Dfx Voodoo3 (2000)
Driver Version: 5.00.2489.0028
I found this site: http://www.voodoofiles.com/3dfxhelp.asp
but as I said earlier, I have NO idea which of these hundreds of drivers I need.
So, can any of you gurus suggest a 'simpler' means of updating my video driver? I know my computer's not 'top of the line' (it's about 4 years old), but I figure it SHOULD be able to handle some basic video editting, or am I wrong?

Wow...someone with a Voodoo card...and not on a dusty, forgotten shelf...

Go there and click on "3Dfx", then click your OS (WinXP) at the top and download the drivers.
With that card, you will be lucky not to have errors...the drivers are really old and nobody does any work on them anymore. Haven't since 2000 or 2001.
If you want the "latest" beta drivers that supposedly support DX8 (Hmmm....), then go to
http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo3.htm
and download the bottom link on that page. |

Thanks for the reply.
I'm guessing your response was a 'polite' way of telling me I've got a dinosaur for a video card.  I guess that means it may be time to upgrade...any suggestions in the 100,000 won price range? Or do I need to fork out more?
Motherboard info:
CPU Type - Intel Pentium 4A, 2400 MHz (4.5 x 533)
Motherboard Name - VIARAMA U8788 (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 3 DIMM, Audio)
Motherboard Chipset - VIA VT8753E Apollo P4X266E
As stated earlier, my main interest is in editting video (digital home videos), not gaming, or the like...

I'd be inclined to recommend a 6600GT for your AGP slot and your price range. |

I'm glad you read it as polite. I was just kidding around.
Yeah...cubanlord has a good thought about the 6600GT (for about 120~130,000) or even a vanilla 6600 (right around 100,000)...not overkill, not insanely priced and it will serve you well for a long time. Seeing as you got a lot of mileage from your Voodoo3, the 6600GT should last well into your retirement.
I still like ATI for their 2D image quality, but I'm probably splitting hairs. Besides, they don't offer much in that price range for an AGP interface. |

This frustration with video editting has reminded me that my computer will, in fact, be 4 years old this fall....scary. Until now, it's more than served me well, but a little upgrade here and there never hurt...

You know, you neednt spend even 100,000 for a video card. There are many cheaper solutions that will better your Voodoo by far.
When you are in the market, post back and see if we can't lend a hand. Until then, did the drivers work out? |

Unfortunatley, no. Tried both sites, to no avail. Still getting the same error message (something to the effect of..."You display driver has stopped responding...blah, blah, blah..." ---- I'm not fluent, but my Korean's good enough to figure that much out ).
It may be time to simply bite the bullet and upgrade. And I'm not too upset about spending 100,000 on a new video card, especially if it'll do me for another 3-4 years...
Now, a few questions about the 6600 and the 6600 GT...
Is 128MB enough, or should I 'do it right' and go for 256MB? I can find the 6600/128MB for as cheap as 47,900 on line, and the 6600/256MB for 68,500.
Oddly enough, I've found the 6600GT/256MB for as cheap as 65,500, yet the cheapest 6600GT/128MB goes for 75,500.
However, there are a number of different manufacturers...(FORSA, REXTECH, Meditech, Gigabyte, Sigma...etc.). Are there any I should avoid / stick to, or are they all pretty much the same?
Finally, what other specs are important when looking at these cards?

Thanks for the link, Cubanlord, but finding a card is not a problem. I know the Danawa site, but I always check this one out too. Danawa's good for checking finding the thing you want, with the specs you want, but I can usually find better deals at Bestbuyer...

Wow, I had a voodoo 3000 6 or 7 years ago.
Did you upgrade to 2000 or XP when you had this problem?
When Nvidia bought up 3dfx they instantly stopped supporting 3dfx's cards, and I found that when I upgraded my o/s my video card couldn't make the transition without newer drivers. |

If one isn't gaming, then 128MB is enough for any 2D work you will be doing. Actually, if you aren't gaming, almost any card made in the last few years will suffice.
Just don't forget...you need an AGP card, not PCI-e. The page you linked to has a lot of PCI-e cards, and they won't work with yor current motherboard. Again, on the linked page, the choices are very limited ofr an AGP card.
On the page, the ASUS N6600 looks ok. I like ASUS and tend to stick with bigger names for my hardware purchases. |
