I've been in Seoul for 6 weeks and it rocks like no other. Truly. I'm exactly half way between Sinchon and Hondae and I couldn't be happier.

But something odd happened yesterday.

I was walking the back streets with my pseudo-Korean girlfriend and she said "let's go back to the hasook" and... I didn't want to. I looked around and suddenly realised there was no-where else to go! (For quiet time). No park, big space, etc. We ended up sitting in a big gravel car park with a 1 sq metre grass patch.

I need some nature! Like a big national park, an awesome beach.. both... stuff like that. Not so much temples and tourist attractions (though I'm not totally adverse to that) but just some air I can breathe in and rejuvenate.

Know what I mean?

Anyhow I got a big pamphlet on Gyeongdu, that seems pretty cool as a starting point. Has anyone got any other tips or places they'd recommend? Feel free to get real specific. It's a weekend trip so I guess max 4hours or so, but even further if it's unbelievable!

Thanks y'all.

How about a great country-side drive?

Rent a car and get OUT OF TOWN. Not on a jam-packed crowded push and shove train or bus - but in a car.

I lived in Chungju for three years - and had a car - and country drives kept me sane and happy. If you drive east of Chungju toward Suanbo - after the second bridge turn off the main road onto a little country road that follows the river for miles and miles - finally to a big waterfall. No traffic - very few people - beautiful nature. And QUIET!

Give it try! You will recover in no time at all.

Korea has some very decent countyside - but you have to get away from the masses of people to find it.

Seorak-san National Park.
Nature at its finest, better in the fall when the colours change though.
Take a bus to Sokcho.
Anywhere in Gangwon-do.

chuncheon is closer and less of a hassle for a weekend trip. it has a couple nice areas to hike in.

Chiaksan National Park near Wonju (also in Gangwon-do) is about 90 minutes- without traffic- from Seoul. The hike to the top is a nice work-out and it's nice to just chill by the creek on one of the trails.
