I was never sure what was going to come first, reunification or this:
The nationalist Hankoryeh has published a column by a Korean medical professor who, after an investigation, has found no scientific basis for the Korean claim that fans can suck oxygen from the air and kill people.
Police report the streets of Seoul are quiet this hour as people come to terms with what has happened.

I've never met a Korean who believed in fan death -- adult or child.
I have the fan on and the door closed in class all the time. |

Koreans' Kimchi Adulation, With a Side of Skepticism
Many see beneficial powers in the national dish, and some scientists agree. Critics keep quiet.
"We found that if you were a very, very heavy eater of kimchi, you had a 50% higher risk of getting stomach cancer," said Kim Heon of the department of preventive medicine at Chungbuk National University and one of the authors. "It is not that kimchi is not a healthy food -- it is a healthy food, but in excessive quantities there are risk factors."
Kim said he tried to publicize the study but a friend who is a science reporter, told him, "This will never be published in Korea."

Kimchi Cancer
http://www.zhion.com/kimchi_cancer.html
Kimchi and soybean pastes are risk factors of gastric cancer.
Results: A decreased risk of gastric cancer was noted among people with high consumption of nonfermented alliums and nonfermented seafood. On the other hand, consumption of kimchi, and soybean pastes was associated with increased risk of gastric cancer.

In five years of living in Korea, and four more years of intimate contact with Korean communities in two other countries, I've never met a Korean who didn't believe in fan death, my wife excepted, and that took work. |

You've got to be kidding! Every student in my high school and every teacher as well as the principal believe in it. I've asked them all.
Can they all be wrong??? |

Damn, wish I would have thought of this--bring along a fan, plug it in, smother your intended victim, and viola, "fan death." Brilliant. |
