Find an attractive woman who is in the same situation, (has a friend who seems depressed), and introduce the two depressed souls. It can make them both happier, (or less sad), and it gives you a shot with the hottie. |

I had a roommate in university who wore suits and neckties at the beach while everyone else was wearing shorts, tank tops, and flip flops. He was pale from staying inside all the time, and spent most of his time on the computer.
He used the computer to download obscure music, old country music, and pornographic characterizations of Disney and Hanna Barbera cartoons (i.e. Jetsons, Flinstones, etc).
Sometimes I would come home from the beach with friends, only to find him at his computer crying with his face down on the keyboard. If we tried to ask him what was wrong or conslole him, he would scream "GO AWAY" with that kind of 11 year old mad-at-mom because she wouldn't buy you McDonald's voice.
He had science fiction stuff plastered all over the room, particularly HR Giger images of aliens violating people. He had the complete set of the Marquis de Sade, which was especially disturbing considering he never had any women around.
It all would have been ok if he weren't such a c ocky p rick that spoke condescendingly about everyone and everything. Not only that, his family was filthy rich, and he had a nice car that he refused to let anyone else ride in.
In the end, I did what any sympathetic college roommate would do to a guy like that; I squeezed a tube of fake shyte under his pillow.

Let me field this question. I have had over 30 roomates in my time.
1. He is anti-social and sulks because he is very depressed. Perhaps this is his first time away from home. He has no friends. You have a very friendly and out going personality, which makes him jealous and resentful. In this situation, he doesn't feel like he knows anyne here well enough to communicate his feelings to. Even when he calls back home, he wants to pretend like life is good, therefore, he gets no help there. In this case, all he needs is someone to confide in about the usual problems foreigners face here.
2. He is the type described by djsmnc. Which, most likely can be fixed by taking him out for or ordering in "coffee." Or take him and get him very drunk before the "coffee."
3. He has some severe mental issues, which he brought over with him. Without the proper counseling, he will carry them for the rest of his life.
Get him some help, and be a good friend. |

This guy frequents the bar scene every once in a while so he probably does have some social skills, but he's just not friendly towards me for some reason. Not a big problem as I'll be moving out in a week or so.
I only have one advice for such people and one only, if you're not happy go home. Simple. |

I personally have no idea why people accept shared housing. Especially from the wackos that make up the ESL/EFL industry. |

Quite possibly in a hope to band like minded people (ie. foreigners) together. |
