I've just put everything into motion at my university to get the paperwork required for working in Korea yesterday. I'll be receiving an early diploma approximately one week after my graduation (my graduation is 17 December, so that would put it right around Christmas...)
The question is, if I will have all the required papers in hand by the third week of December, what would you feel to be the best date to put as my earliest available? I'm thinking that would put me at about the second week of January, but I don't have a solid idea on the length of time it takes to process for the E-2. |

Youre available for hire the day you have your diploma in hand. Factoring in visa-processing time isnt your concern. |

You should give yourself 4 weeks to get your paperwork and visa processed. A good start date would be January 29, 2007. This should work out if you do your job hunting for about 30 days before you get your diploma. These days, it usually takes about 60 days for a school to find a qualified new teacher and get all the paperwork done, when replacing a teacher who is leaving.
You should make January 29, 2007 your available date. This way you'll avoid any difficulties - like being asked to come to Korea early and work without an E2 visa. Get your E2 visa before you come. |

I'll have extra copies of everything, and notarized copies of the original diploma, just do I hopefully will never have the hassle of trying to get these too much after the fact.
Thanks for the suggestions, though I'm slightly torn between arriving in Korea ASAP and arriving with a completed E-2 visa in hand. I suppose it is likely better to have no risk of deportation due to working illegally than suffering a few extra weeks as a barista, though. |
