I believe in the neo-con movement insofar as they assume that the spread of democracy is the best way to bring about lasting peace. It's white magic, but it's nice white magic.

But maybe some people don't want to be free. That's what scares me. Maybe some women would rather live being forced to wear a tent all day. Maybe some women prefer the system where they aren't allowed to be educated or wear lipstick or be killed by their husbands for imagined insults.

Perhaps some men would rather live in a country where teenagers are put to death for being naughty. Maybe they like living in countries with little economic opportunities. Maybe they like being told what to do.

Basically, are some people so backward that they aren't worth saving? Are some people so backward that they will forever live in the Middle Ages and drag their knuckles across the sand of the desert floor? Are some folks so low-down that they will forever be content eating dirt?

In my heart, I believe everyone wants to be free. It takes time. But I could be wrong. Maybe we should all get off our addiction to oil and put the Middle East in its proper place. Let them get back to making rugs, living in poverty, and going to the bathroom out in the backyard with the camels.

Then they will be truly happy. Shiites can get back to killing Sunnis. And Sunnis can get back to killing Shiites. The soccer stadiums will be full again of ecstatic Muslims being thrilled by women being stoned to death. They can go back to hitting their women with sticks.

Everything will be rapture in the land of Allah.

Maybe you want to take a look at this girl's story and think again.

Okay, at the risk of dignifying this decidedly low-brow rant...

If the Russians had succeeded in their invasion of Afghanistan, they almost certainly would have done more for the position of women than the people they were fighting. Do you think that the Afghani people who resisted the Russian invasion did so simply because they hated freedom? What do you think their motivations were?
