ok...It's obvious that the Koreas are big fans of the Canadians, Aussies, and Americans. Big fans of the "White". I just wanted to know are they many Asian background teachers? Are they treated differently??? Cause I'm a Chinese-Aussie. Any info would be great! Cheers! |

Where about are you from in Australia?
There are quite a number of native english speaking Asian teachers here.
The problem is finding them |

You're in luck! there IS a demand growing for British, Australian, New Zealander accents due to the recent influx of such accents on the new TOEIC tests that are taken en masse every month by a ton of eager employees in search of a raise or job applicants wanting to boost their score. I've seen this new movement first hand and have heard from others about it too.
btw...

At my old job, a couple of Kiwi's were asked to use an American accent. |

Yeah,
I'm currently on the hunt for a future job teaching English in Korea. Its something I want to do after I graduate from college. So recently, I've e-mailed several institutions and organizations introducing myself and giving them my contact information.
Whenever I post my information on this site, I'll get a wealth of potential employers who e-mail saying who they are and their interest for me, but then comes the photo part, which is my only problem. Since I'm Asian-American, I don't as much replys as I would like.
Its just funny that when someone e-mails me asking me about my availability and information, I'm excited about a potential job. One recruiter found me a job to apply for, and gave me the whole contract spiel and what not. All he asked for was the photo. But then I e-mail them my photo, and just because of my appearance, I get zilch. Its a real shame, but that's reality and I have to face it.
Thankfully, there was one institution (ELI Academy) who replied back even when I submitted my photo, and they were even curious about my ethnic background. So hopefully, we'll see what goes from there and see if they are interested in me.
But someone else on this site wisefully pointed out, "If someone doesn't want to keep contact with you because of your background, then most likely they are not a good institution to work for in the first place." We'll see where I go from here, and if any of you guys have some advice or words of wisdom for Asian-background people, I'm yo man. |

Good luck with that mate! If anything, why don't you try teaching at public schools? They need all the foreign teachers they can get. |

Yea RockLee, I'll start applying to those later, thanks for the encouragement. I don't graduate till December, so right now I'm just chilling to see what institutions are out there and not. I'll try applying to EPIK later this year, because my Korean professor at uni has more info on them, and perhaps, the connections... |
