I just read a post that said, "Any school that sponsors a teacher's visa, must pay for that teacher's airfare."

The university that I'm about to work for said they wouldn't and never do. I was surprised, but 2 friends who've worked there said they had a wonderful experience at Sogang, so I moved forward and bought the ticket. They were teaching as a whim, a fun thing to do. This is my (new) profession.

Are universities exempt from this immigration requirement?

I wouldn't say it's being exempt as it's not a requirement, more of a nice gesture. On a Uni wage you'll cover your expenses within a short while. It's less likely these days to have the ticket paid for as so many people do a runner and as far as SoKo teaching gigs go, pre-paid airfare is becoming less of a norm in the ESL world - a Japanese company would make you pay, as would any European company. SoKo is waking up. If you pay up front, they see you're serious about the gig.

I believe Gord, but I would like some evidence to this point. I think that this has been a point of debate for some time now. It would be nice to have it settled.

Anyone got proof that Gord is correct.

From what I have been told universities do not cover airfare costs. Some will I would imagine, but I think they are few and far between. Hakwons secure it for teachers. Universities don't have to. It is certainly a good way to weed out persons not fully committed to their decision to come here and teach.

Kind of like different countries that offer ESL positions. Korea flys you here because it has a bit of a rough reputation. You want Thailand? You pay the ticket. Japan? Get a ticket. Again, I don't doubt there are exceptions but it is a definite deterrent against people who are looking for a paid holiday. Serious applicants only!

I sent off an email to EFL-Law and asked them to settle the airfare rumours once and for all.

I asked if employers in Korea were legally obliged to provide a return ticket to people they sponsor on E2 visas...

EFL-Law wrote:
The answer to the question is not set in any written law -rrather it is left to the common law of contract - thus there can be various scenarios -namely, where the employer agrees to pay for the teachers airfare to Korea before he comes - where he agrees to reimburse after he arrives - and whether the Employer wants to provide a return ticket upon completion of contract.

Finally, if the employer wishes to provide a contract with NO airfare, he/she can do that as well.

So there you have it. Gord is correct. I also mentioned that Universities tend to not offer airfare.

EFL-Law wrote:

I am surprised that universities don't pay, but just lately they have certainly been cutting corners on expenses - but it seems unreasonable to expect a teacher to pay for his ticket to Korea and not get reimbursed. If you knew the names of any such universities we would like to know - thus the teacher is left with a 'take it or leave it' situation as far as those emoloyers go who don't offer the ticket.

Most contracts I have seen for private schools (about 120) have offered the air fare (return) - though where the teacher is employed from within Korea and signs a 'standard contract' the teacher should certainly make sure that as he has not qualified for the ticket 'to Korea', the employer will pay all reasonable costs of the visa run. And it would certainly be in the teacher's best interest to make sure the wording is absolutely clear about the procedure for claiming the return airfare - and whether the Employer has attached any conditions, such a cheapest airline, etc, as some employers do, and just when and how the employer will pay that part of the contractual obligation.

The cheap-ass university I worked for for the past two years paid neither airfare nor bonuses (claiming they were subsumed into the monthly salary), and provided unfurnished (if spacious) apartments.

And a bottom-rung wage besides.

What the heck was I thinking?

OK... I'll compile a list of uni's that don't supply airfare... either post your uni here or send me a PM ... (rather than have people contact EFL-Law in dribs and drabs).

Thanks!

The reason that he stays is probably due to the fact that he works a mauling total of around 18 hours a week and gets long vacations. Poor baby! He is one of these guys that expects Korea to do everything for him. Shut up and quit whining over trivial crap.
