If you can get through the anal cavity check, you should be good to go.

Oh I'd say so. You need to wait around till others fill you in on the details though, because I haven't been a teacher in a long time.

One thing is true though...as long as there have been teachers teaching conversation English in Korea...there have been midnight runs. It's as old as the story of the Ark and the flood!

At the airport simply turn in your ARC when you leave....immigration doesnt give a rats ass why you are leaving....*Unless perhaps its a police issue Wink

Buy your ticket....hit the airport and fly home....no one can or will stop you!

You may want to tell the OP that your employer may leave a negative mark on your VISA file that will prevent you from getting work in Korea for a little while...

But if you want to go home, and thats all you care about, no one will stop you.

Also, if the visa is not properly cancelled by the boss and employee going to Immigration, the OP will not be eligible to get a new work visa until after the current visa expires.

There are only consequences if the OP plans to come back to Korea to work.

I quit a hagwon job in March and went the ligit route (gave notice, repaid airfare etc). After that I decided on a short break in Singapore whilst I waited for the next job. However, when I got to Incheon airport, the officials took me aside and started asking all sorts of questions such as "why are you leaving?" and "where do you work" etc.
This may be routine, but they then called my (ex)boss and told him where I was and where I was going. It occurred to me that if I was doing a runner, then maybe this could have turned into a tricky situation. I'm not sure on the legalities involved but I thought this might be of interest to anyone considering the Midnight Express.

You will have no problems whatsoever if you do a runner. You can keep your ARC card if you want. Tell the offical you are a doing a runner if you want, they couldn' care less...

If your boss won't let you leave for a major personal reason, you have no choice. You must do a runner.

I don't know, I would have to question whether you should flat out tell immigration your pulling a runner. Probably not a good idea. The smart way is just be quiet and walk out of the country. Most likely nothing will happen.

In all likelyhood nothing will happen to you.

It is possible your former employer notifies immigration and they put a flag on your passeport # and or ID which would prevent you from working in Korea for a while (up to 5 years but usually shorter period).

Except for that...you should not suffer any consequences.

However, and this is not judging, you do know that you will leave your co-workers and students on the lurch here right?

You also know that you will cost your employer a pretty penny (he paid for airfare to bring you over and such).

These are real facts....

I understand you heard that a former teacher had problems resigning...but think about it before you run. It would not be that hard to come to your boss and tell him you have a family emergency at home (if that is the case).

Then again, it is up to you and if you run, nothing else will happen to you unless you plan on coming back to work here.

Best of luck.
