|
|
Hey there
I'm in the market for a new computer (or at least some new parts of one) before I move to Korea (got a job at a public school and start September 1st).
Anyway, I like to play games, watch movies, edit movies, etc on my comp.
I would like something that'd be good for games as my girlfriend and I play stuff like Half Life 2 and such and my comp is getting slightly old for those kind of things (bought it in 2002). My monitor is also HUGE so I'd like to get a flatscreen or something like that.
Any tech heads here have any idea what a decent gaming rig (just monitor, CPU with graphics card etc - I already have very good mouse, keyboard, subwoofers etc) will cost in Korea? Is it cheaper to buy it in US and ship it over or order it online?
Also do you need special adapter plugs or something of the sort in Korea and if so, where can I get them and how much?
Thanks, |

Online will always be cheaper than through a store. You will pay more for things here in Korea (sometimes marginally, sometimes substantially), but there is a bonus to buying here; you can return it if it doesn't work, no questions asked and be given a new one right then and there. No RMA, no mailing stuff around the world...just an exchange.
I won't even pretend that there is enough information in your post to start talking about costs. You need to read and get a little more specific in what you want. Dual-core, ATI or Nvidia, SLI or single card, mainstream or enthusiast, LCD widescreen or conventional, what size monitor... |

Haha thanks for the info. My real problem is that I'm out of the loop with what is good in the video card department. I bought me a Geforce 4 ti 4600 back four years ago.
Basically what video card is the king of the heap right now and what is second and third?
As for monitors, it doesn't really matter as I'm positive I can just figure out a new one...
Basically it boils down to what would be a good CPU unit with videocard that can play next year's games for about 1000 bucks? |

Which videocard you choose is determined by your motherboard, budget, and what applications you use or which games you will play.
For AGP, I'd probably opt for a 7800GS or a 6800GS. nVidia all the way.
For PCI-Express it's more balanced. The ATi X1900XTX are the top cards for ATi, and go for 550k+, and the X1900XTs go for 450k+. The nVidia 7950 card has dual graphics cores, and goes for 660k+, and the 7900GTX with one graphics core goes for 560k+.
The 7950 is significantly better than the X1900XTX. The X1900XTX has more raw power than the 7900GTX, and wins most benchmarks (not all).
Anyway, that should give you some ideas.

There is no need to go with AGP as the newer, higher end, higher performing cards are no longer being made in the AGP style. I wouldn't be suprised to see AGP wither away within the next 2 years. It's slower than the PCI-E.
Call me crazy, but right now, within an affordability range, there is nothing better than the 7900GTX. |

Of course, if you want to simply shop at Yongsan, a couple hours and 400 000 won will get you a very capable gaming machine. Add another 50 000-70 000 for a nice big used CRT
By the sounds of it you aren't looking for a super high end system. You shouldn't have a problem getting what you need here. |

i spent over 3.6 million won (not my money) on my computer here (including a nice lcd). it would have been around $2800 had i done it in the states. i bought my parts at yongsan and built the computer. i checked many websites and found the cheapest places at yongsan and went and got the parts.
i miss newegg ( www.newegg.com ) so much. |

400,000WON will get you crap. You may be able to run games no later than 2002 or '03 if you are lucky. A good graphics card alone will run you 200,000WON. |

I dunno, there are a few more modern games that will run. But, in essence, I agree. I would expect to spend over a million for a gaming machine, and at least 300k on the graphics card alone. 400k wouldn't do more than get you a mediocre gaming machine, at best.

| I think you'd be better off buying the latest gaming console in the US then buying a budget PC once you get to Korea. |

CL... we can't all be bleeding edge hard core gamers and most of us only dream of a core duo system...
P4 / AMD 2.66 gHz CPU, 1 gig RAM, 80 gig HDD, combo drive, nvida 6200 video card...
500k won (or less) .... plays most games for most people... |
