True but a very significant number anyway. Also, when you break it down and notice how many of these fat or obese people are children it becomes downright scary. |

Just curious, what's the fattest country? I always assumed it was the U.S. |

The BMI is the most flawed weight system out there. I believe it was last year or the year before that according to the BMI something like 98% of NFL were obese. Some are big boys but 98% BMI doesn't tell the difference between muscle weight and Big Mac weight.
As for the fattest country (not that is matters as obesity is a global problem) is Australia. 40% of Aussies are obese.
Another sign you're fat. You need a special chair. Two guys I worked with back in Canada needed their own custom made chairs because they were too fat and would break the other chairs and the worst part is everyday I'd see them coming in with a large BK cup. You know they didn' just order a drink. If I ever get to that point I want to be shot. |

| You're fat, when you can pick a few inches of 'it' around your abs and lower back. You're not when you can't. I equate being fat with having inches of it. Does that mean your disgusting to look at? Not by any means, but it's not a bad rule of thumb to have. I think we put ourselves on the downward slope to obesity when we begin to justify anything beyond a few inches of fat as being okay and average. Don't mean to ruffle any feathers here. |

I've come to the conclusion that being fat is subjective. When I lived in the US I was 140 lbs and 5' 4'. I have size C boobs, a nice waist, and very muscular legs...think Swartzeniger ( did spell that right?)_legs.I I used to get complimented on them almost daily Anyway, when I was in the U.S i felt spectacular. Now that I'm in Korea I feel fat
I went from a medium in then US to almost the largest size they have here!!! MY GOD!!!! AM I a FATTY!!!! |

My girlfriend and I are laughing at all these posts.. we have both battled our weight for most of our lives.
She especially came here concerned about her extra weight. She vowed to go to a gym and go back to Canada next year as slim as was a few years ago (like 5,8, 130). So, now she's pregnant! Guess she'll be gaining even more weight - lol!
It was funny,.. when we first got here our Korean co-worker took us to E Mart and led us DIRECTLY to the the exercise equipment and said we should work out. Hint hint?? God bless Korean honesty.
My girlfriend has vowed to work out vigorously once she has the baby and I will gladly stay home and do my part by staying home with the baby. |

I'm back home in the U.S. for a visit. First time in 3 years and second time in 5 years. MAN! Before it was just the baby boomers that were over weight, then visited home 3 years ago and many men my age (30ish) were over weight.
Now, everyone under the bright blue sky is overweight! Finding an average/healthy weight woman here is like seeing an American in Korea (Wonju, not Seoul!). It's THAT rare.
I went to Wendy's, asked for a medium coke and got what used to be a super-size drink!
Went to the gas station and saw a little 'ol lady carrying a MINI-KEG, 64 OZ. "CUP". Couldn't believe it. It was like she was carrying an infant, but with a straw coming off the top. I meant to take a picture and post it. It's funny and sad at the same time. American excess to the extreme. That's the logo these days, isn't it? "Extreme" this-and-that. I really feel sorry for my country. All I can do is ensure that I don't go down that same road. |

I could stand to lose maybe about twenty pounds. I've been working on it--I hit the gym regularly, and put in about four miles of brisk walking outside when the weather is comfortable. My diet doesn't contain a lot of excess fat and calories, although it could be better (working on that, too).
When I first came to Korea back in '84, I was as trim as I was in high school. After marriage that same year, I slowly gained weight as my wife's cooking increased and my activity decreased. When my older brother died in '89 of a heart attack at the age of 43, it made me take a closer look at myself; I've been working on improving my condition ever since, with many ups and downs (literally). |

What is a fat person exactly?
Is a fat person someone that a crackhead skinny person calls fat? That means the a 5'9 95 pound crackhead would call a 5'9 150 pounder fat.
When I was 160, 5'9, I had people telling me I was fat. It puzzles me. The only way I could get skinnier was to lose everything down to the bone.
I think that many people cannot concieve the notion of being fat. Some people think the skinnier you are, the healthier you are. When in fact that is not the case. There are many skinny people who are very unhealthy such as, crackheads, anorexics, and people that strave themselves.
I think some people have good metabolism, therefore, even though they don't work out, they are skinny. They point their fingers at others and say they need to exercise. Eventhough the skinner person eats a heck of a lot more and never exercises.
In Korea, they are in no position to judge the amount that others eat. Most people here eat a heck of a lot more than me of the same food. Why don't they gain weight as easily? Take a genetics class. |

Apparently,
Don't worry. By time you reach 40, you will be very very skinny. |

"crackheads, anorexics, and people that strave themselves" aren't in the equation. They aren't "regular people" in this discussion. Nor are people who are obese due to some outside influence, medical or otherwise.
People with a slower metabolism simply have to eat less or change what they eat, and do the necessary exercise to remain at a level where others won't percieve them as fat. Everyone has to take responsibility for themselves. If you are fine with being and others labelling you as 'fat', then fine - do what you like. If you are a toothpick and fine with it, then great.
I have a fast metabolism, and remain as I have been for all of my teen/adult life, 173cm, 65Kg. Just because I can seemingly eat anything and not gain weight, doesn't mean I should. The food quality is still important, and as a result of a high metabolism, I have to be sure to take in more calories daily. Slow or fast, all people have to watch what their caloric intake and exercise needs, and adjust both in order to remain healthy.
I don't pity people who let themselves become fat; there is always something that one can do about it, though it's not easy. Skinny people who don't work out are in the same catagory as obese people. "Skinny" is not cool. "Fat" is not cool. Both groups people are basically lazy, and both are unhealthy. |

| In a perfect world, people would have a clear picture of the way others are. But, I am talking about people judging others based on appearance. People see you as fat, etc..., usually at first glance and rarely ask why. |

I agree that in a perfect world, we would all know enough to realize that there are reasons. However, this doesn't change the fact that one is indeed overweight.
"Fat" is the problem here, IMO. It's a horrible word and tends to hurt, even those who are comfortable with themselves.
As I said, there are reasons and eveyone has a story. When I am out walking around, I look at people, and yeah...I see an obese person and think "They are obese." I don't necessarily think about it being bad or good - it's just an observation.
In my life, I have met very few overweight people who had a valid reason - a medical condition or similar - and very few overweight people who I wouldn't call lazy. Lazy in their activity level and lazy in caring for what they eat. So, they are fat and will remain that way (probably get bigger) until they do something about it. Just don't complain about it over a Whopper and fries.
When are you fat? Depends on who you ask. The best answer is "when you think you are", but that isn't a consensus and it's silly to think it will ever be.
Thinking someone is fat isn't 'judging' them at all. It's like seeing a bald guy and thinking "he's bald". It's an observation of reality. When "why?" comes up, that's when the judgements start. |
