$180 CDN. I'll be building at least one computer in the near future so it didn't make sense to buy anything better. Within the year this computer will either become my wife's home pc or the work pc for our new business, and I'll build myself a system that can take advantage of intel's forthcoming duo core chips, 64 bit o/s, pci-e video etc.

go amd... intel is still much lower on the price/performance ratio. I find it funny how people are actually still buying intel... how do they stay in business when, for the last 4 years or so, amd has been kicking their ass in price, performance, value and longevity of chips?

You make it sound like it's a static situation.

I'm not wedded to Intel, I've had AMD in the past and when the time comes to buying a new board and cpu I'll buy whichever is putting out the best product.

FYI I referenced Intel in my post because Conroe/Merom is "the big news' right now:

You can cheer for AMD, I'm going to keep cheering for me, the consumer.

Wow, I had no idea the difference between an overclocked 6200 and a 6800 GS would be so great, and so stunning.

Looks like I'll be replaying FEAR and HL2 before getting around to Oblivion and Prey.

Four great games!!

Oblivion will test your new video card to the max. Just try walking through the grassy highlands in the Oblivion world. On medium or even high settings. My old 6600GT nearly melted!!! Then I turned all the settings down to low.

FEAR is almost a different game with a good video card. Much more dynamic. I have played it through twice now. Once with the old 6600GT and once with my new 7900GT. Quite a difference. If my memory serves me right.

I've only played the Prey demo but was impressed.

At the moment I'm into all the WWII games.

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault......great! Very playable and lots of action. Hand-to-hand fighting with Japs to defend your over-run foxhole!! Fun!!

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30.....just started it. Seems good so far. More real than Medal of Honor or Call of Duty.

If you figure out how to get past the strafing attacks at the airfield in MoHPA, let me know.

Brothers in Arms is good, as is the sequel. I suppose it's more 'real' than Call of Duty but since it's arguable how 'real' any computer game can be it's kind of like saying an apple is closer to being a tomato than a watermelon. As games, they're both different, both good.

Eamo, I just got a new card and you've already got me dreaming of a PCI 7900! Damn you to heck!

Couldn't do it myself!! I cheated and used the maplist to jump to the next level.

I read one walkthrough which said concentrate your 50 cal fire at the 1 O'clock position as the zeros come from there so you get more time to blast them. I tried it about 10 times. No luck.

The 7900GT is excellent but it should be at 300,000 won!!!

Okay I posted a different topic about this but I decided to ask here too.

I'm into the new games etc and am in the market for a new computer. Last one I had was from 2002.

Anyway, I want a badass graphics card because I just came into some money and I never had one before. So I guess I've been hearing that the
Radeon X1900 XT is one of the best.

Any thoughts on that?

Also, anyone know what kind of deskt top CPU I should get with it? I'm really out of the loop with this stuff. Assume I wanna spend 1000 bucks or less on the whole computer (not counting graphics card). Disregard monitor, keyboard, speakers etc all that crap.

Anyway, anyone know where a good site to get this stuff is and who would sell a computer with the card already inside? I keep looking on Dell and BestBuy and stuff but too many of their computers already have older cards in them that I'd rather not pay for. Does any site do custom jobs and send them to Korea? I'm in the USA right now but I'm leaving for Bucheon in about 2 and a half or 3 weeks.

Yeah, well...that card will set you back half of your budget. The lowest price is 445,000.

What kind of monitor do you have? You say to disregard it, but there is nothing more hilarious than someone getting a top-end, 512MB graphics card with a 17" monitor.

Intel Dual Core (Duo2) are the go right now. The lowest priced one, and that's pretty much your budget. RAM, mainboard and HHDs will have to wait?

Get a bigger budget, mate. Or think a bit smaller.

Why is that so bad? A good 17" LCD has a native resolution of 1280x768... as do most 19" LCD's. So, for image quality, the 17" would be a better bet really. Really though, a top-end video card is still great regardless of the monitor because it will pump out a nice, smooth fps with cranked settings (8x AA/16x AF) so the image quality will be there no matter what.

About the cpu, I haven't read much on the dual core Intel's, but from my understanding, AMD's have been the way to go for a while now with regards to bang for your buck. But if you're disregarding everything and you have 1M to spend on just the computer, you can get a fairly decent system. Personally, I would go for something along these lines:
- AMD X2 4200+
- Good SLI mobo (ASUS or MSI would fit the bill)
- 2 gb memory
- however much hard drive space you want, I'd say go for 2x250gb or something along those lines
- At least a 400W psu

As for the vid card, it seems like nVIDIA is really the way to go as ATi seems to have dropped the ball on the X-series. Go for a 7900GT which should put you back about 300K (best bang for buck out there) and you should be good to go with a fairly solid rig.
Good luck!

I PM'd you the number of a very good guy in Seoul who can assemble a PC. low-end or high-end. He does both.

You can get a decent gaming machine for around, but probably over, 1,000,000 won (1000USD approx) in Korea.

I would split it up a bit like this......assuming the focus will be on gaming.

CPU....................200,000
Motherboard........100,000
HDD....................100,000
Graphics card.......300,000
PSU.....................70,000
Monitor................300,000-400,000
DVD writer...........60,000

So there's about 1,200,000.

Demophobe is right. Why get a kick-ass graphics card then use a crappy monitor. All the new games allow for widescreen mode. It looks awesome. I know. I spent 300,000 on an nVidia 7900GT. At the time I had an old 17'' CRT monitor. I spent a couple of frustrating weeks with that old 17'' then gave in to my desires and ordered a Viewsonic 21'' widescreen LCD for 400,000. It's beautiful. Oblivion in widescreen is stunning. I sometimes stop to just look around at the scenery! So lifelike.

Why buy a card that wants to pump out 1600x1200, 8xAA, 16xAF and pair it with a monitor that can do 1280x1024 at an eye-melting 60Hz? Do the card justice...

Like putting a rocket engine in a Pinto.

I'll try and get a decent monitor I promise Razz

I just said to disregard it because monitors are simple and i understand them and I can pick out a good one on my own. Not too many confusing numbers and acronyms like the graphics cards have.

My last monitor was a big 21 inch beasty but right now I'm going with something smaller since I'm gonna be traveling a lot over the next few years.

Anyway thanks for the tips.

Eamo: I got your PM, thanks. Does the guy put it together American style? I don't want one of those goofy keyboards and Korean Windows etc.

What's American style?? I'm Irish and we put together PC's there just the way they do here in Korea.

No goofy keyboards and he can install English XP as an option.
