Latvian brands tourists 'savages'
Ryanair launched flights from Liverpool to Riga in September
A Euro MP has branded Liverpool tourists "savages" as more people are visiting his country on cheap flights recently launched from the city.
Oskars Kastens MEP said tourists were behaving inappropriately, particularly at night, in the Latvian capital Riga.
He has since said his comments were not aimed specifically at Liverpudlians but at British tourists in general.
Martin King of the Mersey Partnership said the comments are "an unfair and damaging generalisation."
The director of tourism added: "Liverpudlians are not the only people to organise and enjoy stag and hen trips to destinations served by flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
Oskars Kastens MEP said tourists were behaving inappropriately
"The opinions expressed by the MP do not square with the reputation earned by thousands of Merseysiders who have followed our football teams on their various European campaigns over three decades.
"It's clear to anyone who has visited Riga that the Latvian capital is a very beautiful location - but not without it's own problems, some of which are undoubtedly linked to the type of attractions on offer."
Mr Kastens, from Latvia First Party, wants to market Riga as a cultural destination rather than a drinking one.
He said: "If somebody is going to another country for sex tourism it is quite different to a person going to another country to visit museums.
"I'm welcoming people coming to visit my country, but not just for stag parties."
Cheap flights from Liverpool to Riga - for as little as 10 - were launched in September 2005

Then get out of the EU and enforce a visa law, so you Latvians can deny the entry of all British folks.
Idiot. |

The story is one long friggin' ad for it! Their word choice demonstrates they don't really mind it at all. |

The BEEB likes to print comments as news. Inflammatory comments, like my troll subject line get notice. The BEEB does that very often. It has a real Maury Povich flavor to it.
Is the news the comment or the fact that Brit tourists really are "savages"? The Latvian politician is right wing but not too far and he is more aligned with the church so its no surprising he'd say something like that. Thats his job.
I think the Brits might be in for a responsible travel lecture but not a big one.
If you want to act like a big ass, you are welcome to Las Vegas. LV was set up to be a goof zone. Riga is just a poor place.
Yea, I think the BEEB trolled on this one. |

A couple years ago there was a huge problem with Brits in Greece. There seems to be little social prohibition in the UK on drinking yourself into a blind stupor every night. So these British tour companies just totally advertise no holds barred bender holidays. And the locals suffer.
A friend was working in London at an engineering company and she was surprised how her company encouraged binge drinking during the company Christmas party. Few people had problems with coworkers coming in late or missing work if they just said they tied one on that night before. It was kind of like "well, we're all guilty of this so..."
She also found this drinking survey that equated abstinence with drinking "only" two drinks a day. |

Fair play though, I've lived and worked in Greece in the tourist sector and there are a phenomenal amount of Greek tourist operators whose livelihood is linked to bingedrinking. Ouzo and Tequila laybacks, trays of shots for next to nothing and cheap beer are all part and parcel of a visit to some islands, and the locals rake in the Drachmae, or Euro as it is now. |
