...they started using dumpsters or picking up trash piled on the street more regularly instead of it being the next meal for a rat or pigeon.

...transit drivers/operators spoke their announcements in other languages except Korean. This could be hard to do, however.

Any more things you wish would change around the penisula?

If you've ever been to New York, you would see the same thing.
Does that make the US an undeveloped nation?

Korea is overdeveloped.

Too much development here: hyper development. Its virtual suburban sprawl the whole way from seoul to Pusan with many natural beauty spots relentlessly built on or concreted.

Ya, are you saying Japan, England, Canada, America, etc etc are not developed?

Anyways, last I heard, which was today, they announced in Korean, Japanese and English on the subway. Seriously, are you drunk?

This reminds me of my hometown and how a few years ago there was a big drive to make it a "world class city." People had all sorts of ideas and they were making statements like "we'll never be a world class city as long as we have that street full of pornography stores," to which everybody had to roll their eyes and say, "yeah, if we have pornography stores we'll be some hick town like New York or Paris."

i've never minded the trash and the scooters on the sidewalk so much. a lot of what we call development is just window dressing. and a lot of it is very important. i think korea should be working hardest to eliminate gender inequality, even though it's rife in such urbane and developed nations such as japan.

...say, that's an idea to eliminate gender inequality. You could make a bunch of posters that say "Gender Inequality: The Japanese Love It. Do You?"

Learning to put trash in its place would really improve this country. I'm also talking about corruption. Gender inequality is another good issue as well.

There's a government council or committee devoted to corruption, isn't there? I think it's near Gyeonbokgung station in Seoul.

They should learn to drive as well, although I might just be a bit cranky as I nearly got mowed down by a bus as I crossed using a green man today. Rolling Eyes

Corrupt Officials to Forfeit Bonuses
Currently, the maximum amount of annual bonus that public agency senior officials receive is about 160 million won. If such officials are caught and convicted of corruption in 2009, they will have to pay the approximately 480 million won that was paid out to them over three years.
by Hyun-Jin Park, Donga.com (March 13, 2006)

The corrupt officials get to keep their salaries and perks. If they go to jail, they probably will get a pardon on August 15 or another holiday pardon day.

Ex-pats Describe Korea's Culture of Corruption

and RR is on the case...

RR...the special agent for the secret operations service of the UN.

His mission (oh and he chose to accept it) is to post as many links as possible on any given topic in order to put his target nation in a bad light. These links do not have to relate to the topic...the mission is to work by volume not by relevence.

RR..a true patriot...a true linked and perhaps..gasp...the famous missing link himself!
