Anyone taking bets on Syria getting openly involved?

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told the Syrian military on Monday to raise its readiness, pledging not to abandon support for Lebanese resistance against Israel.
"We are facing international circumstances and regional challenges that require caution, alert, readiness and preparedness," Assad said.
"The barbaric war of annihilation the Israeli aggression is waging on our people in Lebanon and Palestine is increasing in ferocity," Assad said in a written address on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the Syria Arab Army.
Diplomats in Damascus say the Syrian army has been on alert since the Israeli onslaught on Lebanon began on July 12 after Hizbollah fighters captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border operation.

I will bet you they don't. Syria gains from problems in Lebanon so they can step in and bring back order (and plunder the nation shh. ) . Besides Israel probably seems to know how to fight real armies. If Syria gets involved Israel's military could start to look a lot more formidable. Syria is probably aware of this.
Assad also knows that Israel doesn't want his government gone because even though he is annoying if he goes the most likely alternative would be the muslim brotherhood. Israel has already found that Hamas and Hizzbollah are a lot more difficult to deal with than the PLO.
It is not like Syria really cares about Lebanon. Let me change that they do care about Lebanon much like a butcher cares about someone making off with the cow he intends to slaughter. |

Syria is unlikely to become militarily involed at this time.
As in: I am unlikely to chop my leg off in order to club my boss with it at this time.
Seriously though, the way things are goiung, Syria will probably wait it out and look to resupply Hezbollah once the fighting subsides. |
