say this: "I want my hair layered"
You know spikey on top but some of the hair is cut shorter than other parts. It's hard to explain, but I'm hoping that there's someone out there who knows what "layered" means and knows how to say it in korean.
I can get the lady to trim and not use a razor but I can't get her to understand how to layer the hair on top. |

Layer in Korean is *cheung* - not to be pronounced like the Chinese surname. It means level - like floors. In Korean, it is written as: 층.
Even if you were to explain to them what it is in Korean, I very much doubt that they will be able to do it - cos layers are pretty much reserved for ladies in this country. |

Wow...so, bacause the hair is on the head of a male, they *can't* do it?!

| no way...it's really the same word used for floors in a building? "Cheong" isn't even a word it's a counter...?? weird but I'll have to take your word for it. |

But what I'm concerned about is does that "layer" tranlsate into hairstyle layering or is it just strictly layers of society, floors, etc. |

The term "layered" in haircutting usually means that all the hair on the head is cut to the same length, therefore giving a layered appearance when it falls down.
Soooo the hairdresser might interpret that funny here 
Some other words you can use would be "choppy", "notched", or "texturized".
A picture is definately worth it in this case!
When I cut my boyfriend's hair (I cut it just how you describe how you want yours- it's a very choppy cut), I layer up all the sides with the buzzer, then I cut the top and blend it into the buzzed (like a good 1/4+ inch of hair left, not completely buzzed) sides by hand. When I do the top I texturize it by randomly notching sections with the scissors (cause I don't have a razor to do it, oh well!). It ends up looking like a mixture between the first and fourth cut on this page: http://www.thehairstyler.com/short_men_hairstyles.asp

It translates to hairstyle layering - cos I just had mine done over the weekend.
Plus the word is the same for both Chinese and Korean - I am Chinese, if that helps. |
