I never deal with immigration anymore. Not for anything.

Just wanted to share that.

Yes, some of the immigration employees at the Seoul Immigration Office in Mokdong are too good for the tar-n-feather treatment.

Do you know of another way to solve this problem? Perhaps Grotto or Tompatz could give you some useful advice?

Have your employer take care of it?

ok... you are having a problem.

I am assuming that you are still at home and NOT in Korea.
I am assuming that this is about the seal on the transcript.

Go to your uni.
Ask for an official transcript in a sealed envelope.
Go to the registrars or bursers office.
Explain your prediciment to them.
KINDLY ask the nice lady at the registrars or bursers office if they would be so kind as to place a stamp or seal over the envelope flap. It does not have to be anything official re: the university but just to satisfy Korean immigration.

Alternatively:
Get a rubber stamp that says "Void If Opened " and stamp the envelope.
Take your transcript envelope to a notary and get them to place a seal over the flap of the emvelope.

Just my opinion...but I think korean immigration will be giving Americans and bit of a go around/run around...koreans are not getting favored visa waiver status and just last month..the U.S. Ambassador to korea spelt out the reasons why in the local newspapers.....koreans and prostitution. The majority of massage businesses in the U.S. are korean owned as well as in Canada.
It's a black mark on koreans.....but...they bring it upon themselves. Personally...I don't want koreans getting visa waiver status.....enough problems as it is.

Actaully, I've had top-notch treatment just about everytime I've needed the services of the Incheon immigration officials. It has taken me, at the most, maybe an hour for me to have everything done anytime I have gone in the past few years.

It could partly be because of my Korean language ability, though.

I haven't had too much trouble with immigration either in the airport or in the offices in Korea - - except for the frustrating long waits at the office whenever you need something done inside Korea.

However, I have had an experience which hints at what you're saying: A Thai friend of mine who wanted to visit Korea because his grandfather fought in the Korean war (part of UN arranged forces) and because of the recent popularity of Korean films and TV dramas. I had given him a short note with my name, address, employer, visa status, phone, etc. in case the airport immigration officer had any questions about where he'd be staying.

When he got to Incheon, he was asked questions and he produced my note to indicate he would be staying with me when they asked what hotel he would be staying at.

The immigration officer started getting upset, telling him "This is Korea, not America." He was sent to office. When he didn't come out at the arrival time, I called the office. Was told he was being held and would be sent back to Thailand on the next flight. When I asked why, the immi aujulshi went off on me in both English and Korean, all about "this is Korea, not America. You can't guarantee a visitor; America won't give Korean people visa but you think you have right to give a note to a visitor and we have to let him in Korea. You are wrong. He's going back to Thailand."

Thailand is in ASEAN, whose citizens are supposed to be able to travel in ASEAN couttries visa free. Still, I had heard that Thai people were having a hard time entering Korea, so I advised him to prepare some things. My friend carried with him a letter showing how his grandfather was a recognized (by the Korean government) Korean War veteran. He had proof of his employment, had plenty of money, had a roundtrip ticket with a return date of ten days later - -- basically, he had everything he needed to answer any questions immigration might have. The one problem: He had an American contact in Korea. The aujulshi who screamed at me made this very clear as the reason he was denying him entry. I tried being very polite about it and explaining I understood and that I was not trying to sponsor my Thai friend, only showing that he would be staying with me, not a hotel. But . . nothing doing; the aujulshi had his mind made up. (A 55 - 60 year old, tough-as-nails type according to my friend.)

I will say again, though: I have had little trouble with immigration in Korea and have even found them to be courteous and for the most part efficient, minus the typical government red tape stuff. I do not hold what happened above against immigration in general, but attribute it to an unfortunate encounter with one older and bitter, egotistical aujulshi with inferiority / superiority confusion complex at the airport. It's like hitting a big pothole in an otherwise not too rough road.

I got over it. He got over it. Figure we'll try it again later, next time with an approved visa (though not required) and with a Korean sponsor (and no mention of an American friend to visit!)

Broke my friend's grandfather's heart, though. He took down the old Korean flag he had kept hanging in his house for over 40 years after that. Quite a sad story for him.

Yeah, amen.If there is one country that should not get visa waiver status it should be Korea. The US has enough problems with illegal mexicans...all they need now are planeloads full of Koreans who overstay and cause problems like prostitution. I mean, the way that Koreans burn US flags, are so opposed to the FTA and basically kiss the Norks asses, did they actually think the US was going to kiss their butts and give them such status...

Maybe you should look more into depth at American History and how it became a "great" Country.

Some Koreans burn the flag, others eath the hamburgers.

Yeah, those darned Mexicans. Who do they think they are, bringing their gddmned tacos and enchiladas and then working for $4 an hour cleaning toilets? They're a nuisance, but a harmful nuisance. I mean, I DON'T WANT CLEAN TOILETS, I like them dirty!

And then, certainly it is the Koreans causing the prostitution problem in the U.S.A. They use their taekwondo skills to bully innocent, godfearing christian american men into entering and patronizing their jezebel establishments. Some upright christian white man is happily walking downt the street thinking how he loves his wife and kids, when suddenly a gang of Korean ninjas push and shove him into the nearest brothel...

Then I imagine you for one will not complain when Korea reciprocates and demands that all US visitors show evidence of continuing employment at home, large cash deposits etc.

Perhaps they should have done so long ago.

Wangja...it would seem like a good idea to reciprocate the same policy as the U.S.....yet there is a hole in that theory....

I have yet to see a large number of Americans overstaying their visas to stay and work in Korea and I have yet to even see an American (other than the ones that married Koreans) who would want to stay in Korea for long periods of time.

Actually, on alot of travel sites, some of the things you are suppose to show the immigarion counter when entering Korea;

1. A return ticket to the place of origin (Something I never had to show).
2. Proof of funds that is suppose to cover the period of my stay in Korea.

Both of which I was never asked to show when I came in and out of Korea.

Exactly. Compare the numbers of US visitors to Korea to the number of Koreans to the US...completely disproportionate. Considering everything that the US has done for the ungrateful Koreans, the very LEAST should be a visa free system. People from the US don't beat down the door to live in Korea...people from the US don't want to vacation in Korea...Korea is not a desirable place.

As for prostitution, I imagine that a great amount of it is related to the Korean community...ie Korean clients. So, Noguri...I think that you are probably Patchy...try to get over it. Korea is not important to the world...stop watching Arirang....

Wangja...go back to France. Don't ever live in America. I'm sure you love living like a second class citizen in Korea...as above, stop watching Arirang...
