So here's my current situation. I'm just wondering what other people would do...

I've been away travelling for three weeks in between contracts. I signed a new contract before I left and the school thought I would get my visa while I was away. I said I'd try. I was in the US for two weeks and then back in Korea for a night before going to Taiwan for a week. I got the email with my visa number on the night I got back to Korea, and then went to the consulate... whatever it really is... in Taiwan to try to get the visa, and they told me it would take three to five days. I got to Taiwan on Friday afternoon, not in time to get to the consulate, so I went on Monday morning, and as I was leaving on Wednesday afternoon I didn't have time to get the visa.

so now the school says it's my fault that I didn't get my visa done, and they want me to pay for a trip to Japan. I'm pretty sure that my contract (which I can't check right now) says the school has to pay for half of my round trip ticket to the US, and also all expenses related to getting my visa, but they say they signed the contract thinking they wouldn't have to pay for a trip to Japan.

I know technically I should win this as the contract says I'm right, but do you think the school has legitimate grounds for complaint, and should I just suck up the cost of the trip to Japan, or should I stand my ground and make them pay? noting that I *really* dislike conflicts and my natural impulse would be to let them get away with this, but I'm kind of annoyed that their position was (I thought) a bit rude, in that they said it was all my fault and my mistake that I didn't have everything done when I really did everything I could and frankly would much rather have had everything dealt with already... I've been travelling enough lately and I really don't want any more airplanes or airports in my life for a while.

Do you feel in any way that you could have pulled it off with decent effort, taking into account the time you had to do it?

Like I said, I got to Taiwan on Friday afternoon. I don't think I could have got to the consulate in time then, but even if I had, it's still more than "three to five" working days between then and Wednesday morning which is the last possible time I could have picked it up... and even then, I wasn't staying in Taipei most of the time so it would have been hugely inconvenient. so no, I don't think I could have pulled it off.

Then IMHO, you are not responsible for the extra cost.

They thought you'd get your visa while you were away and you said you'd try. You were in the States for 2 weeks and didn't come back with a visa? Give your head a shake.

Did you read the whole story? I couldn't get it in the States as I didn't have my visa number then.

Nope. Sorry. My bad. I read it twice I think and missed it. I thot I was pretty good at reading. Apparently not. Maybe I should stick to chopsticking. I hear I'm mahhhhvelous at that.

In that case, I guess the boss should pay or worst-case scenario you split it.
