Not sure if anyone posted on this some time before. It's an NPR (National Public Radio) report on how an SNU professor copied a laser measuring tool technology, went out and set up a company to produce a copy product - - - and got an innovation "new technology" award from the government for it !

The story is from February 2005. In it the SNU professor admits copying it.
Says the $80,000 price tag was too expensive for his SNU lab budget, so he made a copy of the tool. Then, apparently got the idea to just leave SNU, set up a company to produce a copy -- and use exactly the same name for it at first, later changing it slightly.

The report seems to say that the Michigan company has just moved on and developed something better, have patented it, and hope it won't be similarly copied. (Apparently, the Michigan company didn't get the patent registered in Korea in time - - or forgot / neglected to do it all together; so the Korean side was able to jump on the technology for the Korean market. The shocking thing is that the SNU professor ended up with an innovation award for new technology from the Korean government!)

CharlieDD,

Trust me - this is the teeny tiny tip of a massive iceberg here. Between Korea and China western patent violation investigators could earn heapum big overtime. And Bush continues to embargo Cuba. Go figger. Rolling Eyes
