What's the most trivial thing you've seen written here that ended with a "Hub of Asia, yeah right!" kind of reaction? And is it going to just get worse and worse? Will the day come when we see a "I tried to tie my shoes this morning and one of the laces BROKE - hub of Asia, my ass!" thread? |

Hey, if this backwater xenophobic place wants to sprawl "Hub of Asia" all over the place, then we have every right to mock them. No matter how trivial! |

I first learned WTH Hub of Asia is all about and what the big deal with it is on this board. Hopefully we will greet such a day before too long. |

As a joke, I will compare Korea and Japan in the form of "hubs" and the types of cars they would be on;
Japan- Kinda' like the hubs on a BMW
Korea- Kinda' like the hubs on an El-Camino
Anyway questions... |

I kinda like that idea. I think everytime something goes wrong here I'll use that expression. It could be the next great Davism.
Maybe Korea will turn into the "Hub of Asia, my ass!" Hub of Asia.
Dang, it's hot and humid today - hub of Asia my ass!
(hmmm, I like it....) |

(You've probably already seen this, but...)
Does anyone still believe Korea was serious about this "hub" BS? Certainly not Harold Piper, former editor of the JoongAng Daily and a professor at Yonsei GSIS.
Korea's hub' dreams melt in the heat

There are a number of indicators pointing to a Hermit Kingdom rather than hub strategy. One is last spring's fiasco of government indecision and outright welshing that led to the delay and continuing uncertainty about the new Yongsan Foreign School, something that international business interests had pushed hard, with they thought support from the Korean government.
Another plank in the "flub-the-hub" strategy may be Seoul's refusal to hold North Korea accountable for its actions. The Kaesong Industrial Complex and other such efforts make sense if the message sent to the outside world is that the two Koreas have put aside former hostility. But the message now being sent is that cooperation on the peninsula is hostage to the caprices of the Dear Leader. Sorry, but when I become a billionaire, I will be looking for a more promising investment arena.
The linchpin of the "No-hub-here" strategy, however, and the reason that I am convinced that cunning, not incompetence, is afoot, is the Blue House's announcement that there will be no free trade agreement with the United States unless goods produced in North Korea are treated as South Korean.
But North and South Korea are separate economies and independent sovereignties; both are UN members. So should goods produced cheaply in Mexico have free entry into South Korea under the free trade agreement? Further, does the Roh administration really believe Washington will give the Pyongyang economy such a break as access through South Korea for its manufactures cost-free to the North?
These points must be obvious even to the Blue House. What we can infer, then, is that the Roh administration wishes to exempt Korea from global free trade, but also wishes the blame to fall on someone other than Korean farmers or labor unions namely, on Americans. Anyway, isolation from the world worked pretty well for North Korea, right?
I have a T-shirt. "Dynamic Korea, Hub of Northeast Asia," it says. It's a nifty little souvenir, but I guess it's time to offer it on e-Bay and see what I can get for it. |

I dunno... but outside my window is gotta be the hubbub of Asia.
Cripes, I can't even log onto a chatboard in this country without running into another thread about hubs.
"Hub of Asia" my ass!

But who cares to talk about that? Hub of Asia or not hub of asia. Whatever the PR crap the government makes, it does not affect us. |

Are you forgetting exactly who initiated the whole "Korea, Hub of Aisa" myth, Mith? If you hate hearing it as much as most of us perhaps you wouldn't mind registering your complaint with the local media and governmental agencies.
Many expats would consider it a great favor if you could finally put your Korean skills to good use and convince the local media (Arirang TV is a good place to start) why sparing us the mindless repetition and themselves the embarrassment, is a good thing.
Mithridates - just added one to the collection 'specially for you http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?p=865761#865761 |

A "hub" needs to offer the utmost convenience to those who use it, for both transit to other points internationally and domestically.
Why then is there no direct connection between the new Incheon Int'l airport and the KTX or the subway system of Seoul and its suburbs?
When the new international airport was being built in Incheon the KTX line was being built at the same time. It would seem that someone could have come up with the idea to link the two, thereby allowing travelers to zip into Seoul or other major cities on the peninsula.
If they were really serious about this "hub" thing, surely this would have been a logical step to take. Yet, here we are five or so years later and still having to take a bus into transit points in Seoul or outlying cities.
On a seperate, uh, train of thought: Korea really just isn't geographically or economically placed to become a "hub". There will always be greater pull to destinations and opportunities in Japan and, increasingly, China here in the Far East (or N.E.) Asia. It sounds good as a campaign slogan, but I think people in the know know that its just today's campaign. |

Yes, like the "2002 Again" campaign for the World Cup. |

Well, today I decided to tackle over-reliance on TOEIC instead. Hm, I see the editor's made one mistake - not 40% of the population but 40% of the GDP. Could have been worse.

I think Arirang tv is a lost case because AFAIK they recieve funding from a foundation and don't need to worry about whether people actually like what they make or not. I don't work there though so I'm not sure. |

"Hub of Asia" my ass!
From now on I'm going to do this once per day, religiously, right here on this thread.
I feel inspired. Thanks, Mith! |
