hello!
just wondering if anyone knows some good venues in seoul or busan where i can hear some reggae/funk/soul/dub etc. and also are there any websites in english with listings of music events and the like? what are the clubs like?
im busting for a boogy! im in the country, and i only have one bar in my town. needless to say, the tunes there are minimal. and i can't dance in my loungeroom anymore!
thanks! |

Hey,
There's verrrry little in the way of dub/reggae. Last Saturday night I was at Cargo in Hongdae for a night labeled as breakbeat/reggae and I'll be damned if I heard one drop of reggae all night!
Bar Nana in Itaewon has some of the tunes you're probably looking for. Good spot. DJ Conan plays there all the time. He's my favourite Korean dj -- he's got a good stash of funk, hip hop, breaks, fun dancin' tunes. He's part of a "crew" called Break Bakery, they're all worth checking out.
Theres a band called The Funk Ups, a tight 3-piece (or maybe 4, I forget) that plays funk in the same vein as The Meters, MMW, etc. They're good!
DJ Mark Farina (of mushroom jazz fame) is playing at the W Hotel (Walkerhill) on Friday August 25th.
Go to www.02pro.com and click on Boards > Parties In Korea.. Its a good resource for upcoming dj shows in Seoul.
SOULIVE will be here in September! They're playing at a jazz festival on an island somewhere in Korea. That will be awesome.. (though I won't be around anymore by then). I think Brad Mehldau (awesome jazz pianist) will be there too.. The rest of the lineup hasn't been announced yet.
Bands from the outside rarely come 'round.
Hope that helps! |

Disturbing news! No reggae or dub....I was out at a Vancouver club recently where I heard a great deejay spin a mix of hip hop and dub reggae.
Please don't tell me if I come to Korea I'll have to give up nights out dancing to dub... |

Right on, Fruity! If I don't end up going to that Mark Farina gig, I know where I'll be.
Re: reggae --- this past Friday night I ended up at Club Aura and it was all reggae. So, I guess there is reggae, sometimes, you just have to look hard and keep your fingers crossed. Or even better, as you mentioned, start your own reggae night. Good call! |

Club Aura is tough to find. It's halfway between Hongik University and Sinchon. If you know where Ssamzie Space is, it's around there. |

check out the band Windy City. They just played the Pentaport Rock Festival and are playing the Jarasum Jazz Festival in September. They play funk and reggae, pretty good stuff. |

It's never picked up much. I blame the lack of drugs. |
