apologist: WHAT?! I'VE BEEN HERE TEN YEARS AND THAT'S NEVER HAPPENED TO ME OR ANYONE I KNOW, THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? IT MUST BE YOUR LACK OF CULTURE. WHAT WERE YOU WEARING? I BET YOU WERE DRESSED LIKE A HO SKANK.

normal person: I'm a guy

apologist: IT'S STILL ALL YOUR FAULT.

it is someone who thinks the sun shines out of koreas ass. whenevr someone tries to have a rant about something out of the ordinary or very ordinary that has happened to them in korea, someone jumps down their throat and tells them to go home if they dont like it. always "apologising" for koreas misgivings, because its "their country" and if you dont like it, then leave." tends to get a bit old after a while. usually its either some one who has been here forever, someone who has just got here, or someone who is in a bad mood. anyway, this thread is full of them

I disagree.

There is a line between whining and bigotry and apologists point out when someone has crossed that line. Whiners can't stand it when someone calls them on their s*it.

An apologist is a person who dares to say anything nice about Korea,
and usually gets retorts likes these:

"If you see anything good about Korea, then you are not looking deeply enough under the surface. In fact, you are a naive, gullible, fool."

"You can't possibly be happy here. You must be compensating. You're like a white person who shakes hands with every black person he sees."

"If you're better off here than you were in your own country, then you must have been a real loser in your own country."

"If you're loyal to Korea, then you're a traitor to your own country. You didn't give a hoot in hades what happened on nine-eleven, do you!"

"So you like Koreans better than you like us, huh? All right, then, reject us! See if we care!"

"What right do you have to be happy when we are unhappy? Don't you know there is a Law of Conservation of Happiness?"

"Oh! So you're happier than we are! So you must be better than we are! Well, touch you!"

I think a dictionary could have prevented this thread.

Both "sides" are going to give sarcastic definitions of apologist and whiner. And they're all going to be knee-slappingly hilarious. The funnier question is who is the biggest apologist and who is the biggest whiner.

Apologist: Patchy then Homer (sorry Homer)
Whiner: It was Derreck, but now it's Hellofaniceguy or Adventureman.

average foreign teacher: anyone who eats kimchee for breakfast probably eats fetuses for lunch.

apologist: judging someone for eating fetuses is a western cultural standard not shared by koreans with confucian ideals.

average foreign teacher: homo.

apologist: facist.

Silly question OP.

The whole apologist vs whiner thing is dumb at best. It is used by people who need to see things in black and white in order to make sense of their world.

The reality is that you only get a partial (at best) view of anyone on here from their posts.

I get tagged as an apologist and if that term is useful for some here then good for them.

Tomato made a good point in his post but the term apologist gets tossed around like its on sale 2 for 1 around here.

Best of luck with your question steve....oh and by the way...according to board classification you are at present a newbie and will soon become either an apologist or a whiner. Give it time man.

Unless of course you prefer to be normal and accept that people debate from their own points of views and that differences of opinion are normal.

Oh and billy, no apologies required my man...the tag of apologist is in my opinion irrelevant so feel free to tag me and other users at will. Wink

Complete and utter garbage of course. If I criticize or am negative about Korea in some way it certainly does not make me a racist. They are simply not true.

An apologist would say the rampant spitting in this country is ok because it's their country and they can do what they want. How dare anyone impose their cultural values on Koreans!

I say that spitting spreads disease, most notably Tuberculous. I hardly think it's racist for me to say it is disgusting and that it offends me. I think Koreans would be far better off if they punished spitting like they do in Singapore for example.

I respect other people's views when they are sensible. I may not agree with people like Homer all the time but I still respect him for sticking to his guns. As long as one is objective we can all get along. Daves's ESL Cafe is much better than a lot of boards I have seen and a little worse than others.

Hee hee. Just kidding. I like to think of myself as a realist. I see the good and the bad about living and working in Korea. Sort of in the middle of apologist and whiner. Be like me. Wink
There are good and bad things about Korea just like any country. Naturally on this board the negative things get more press. Keep it balanced and you will be fine. Clear as mud right?

I imagine everybody sees themselves this way and thinks you should be more like them.

they are, of course, wrong. the only way to really get a balanced perspective is to studiously read my posts.
